PC's Not Members of Domain Unable to Connect using Outlook Anywhere
Hi, I'm running Exchagne 2007 SP1 on Server 2008. I the RPC service installed, as I do a digicert certificate. I have no issues connecting to OWA. I'm also able to connect to Outlook Anywhere using notebooks which are members of the domain, when they are outside of our LAN. The problem I have is connecting via Outlook Anywhere on computers that aren't members of the domain. Suggestions welcomed. Thanks, Adam

What is the error message you are getting? Is it happening with one user or all of them trying to connect to there mailbox from outside? Gulab | MCITP: Exchange 2010-2007 | Lync Server 2010 | Windows Server 2008 | Skype: Exchange.Ranger | Blog: www.ExchangeRanger.Blogspot.com

Sorry I forgot to add the error message which is The action cannot be completed. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action. The error is occuring for multiple users. For example my personal notebook which is a a member of the domain running Windows 7 Outlook 2010 connects outside of the LAN. Yet when I add the same settings to my personal notebook Windows 7 and Outlook 2007 produces the error above. Users who are not members of the domain using Outlook 2010 also reciive the same message. There are no certificate errors when connecting to OWA. We also have a number of mobile devices (WP7, iPhones and Nokia's) which connect without any problems.

Are you running Exchange SP1? Was it fresh install or you upgraded it from RTM to SP1? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927481 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2006508 Did you check the above articles? I would appreciate if you describe your exchange environment in detail. Hi Gulab, I'm running Exchange 2007 which was installed from RTM. The host OS is Windows 2008 Enteprise SP2. Exchange SP1 was installed later. I'm running the following roles on a single machine Hub Transport, Client Access, Mailbox The first article although refers to Exchagne 2003, the messages are different from those that I'm getting. The second refers to Exchagne 2010 Thanks Adam

Hi, So you are able to connect via Outlook anywhere when it is Domain-joined machine, but after configuring the profile on the external machine, you are not able to connect via Outlook Anywhere, error message “The action cannot be completed. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action”. Is that correct? Based on my experience, this may occur if your External PROXY URL is not available for the external client machine, and my suggestion is: 1. Verify your external DNS record and make sure the proxy URL is pointing to the external IP address of your CAS server; 2. Also, make sure there is a record pointing the Autodiscover URL to your CAS server; 3. On the problematic external machine, launch IE and try to access the above two URLs to see if there is any error. 4. Run the online test to see if there is any error for Outlook Anywhere configuration: https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/ Hope it is helpful. Fiona

Hi Fiona, Thanks for your response. I have run the test tool you suggested and reciveeved an error on the point below. There was a link to help resolve the issue which mentioned issues with Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2008 requiring Exchange 2007 SP1 RU4. I currenntly donwloading the latest SP. I will also make sure that we have port 6004 forwarded to our Exchagne box. I will update you tomorrow on the outcome. Thanks Testing the Name Service Provider Interface (NSPI) on the Exchange Mailbox server. An error occurred while testing the NSPI RPC endpoint. er, I guess your Exchange server is fine if you are able to connect internally. anyway, take a try and add the registry below on your GC servers: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters Value name: NSPI interface protocol sequences Data type: Multi String Value data: ncacn_http:6004 Reboot the server to apply this change. If the issue continues, please let me know more information below: 1. Can you access the external URLs from the problematic client computer? The expected result of rpcproxy.dll is a blank page and the result of Autodiscover url is error code 600. 2. Do you publish your CAS server via TMG/ISA? If yes, did you setup a rule and allow the Outlook Anywhere access? 3. When did you receive the error message that server not available? As soon as you launch Outlook or when you try to setup the profile and click check name? Thanks. Fiona

Hi Fiona, Re: regisistry settting you suggeste I add don't have the subfolder "Parameters" 1 Yes I can access URL from problematic machine. 2 We don't use TMS/ISA although we user other security measure. I will need to check that Port 6004 is forwarded tomorrow. 3 I receive the error message when I attempt to configure Outlook on a PC that is not a member of our Domain which is outside of our LAN and attempt to check name. My personal notebook which I take outside of the LAN operates without issue outside of the LAN using Outlook Anywhere. Thanks, Adam

Hi Adam, Thanks for your reply and the clarification. It appears to be autoconfig issue instead of Outlook anywhere problem. Let me explain it in details: During the process of Outlook profile configuration, there is NO connection between Outlook client and Exchange server; we can’t expect Outlook resolve the FQDN or a host name from internal network. It is impossible or insecure. To setup the Outlook profile automatically, Autodiscover service must be working fine. For an external client, it means the URl Https://SMTPsuffix/autodiscover/autodiscover.xmlor https://Autodiscover.SMTPsuffix/autodiscover/autodiscover.xmlis available. And then, just input the user credentials and let Outlook run without “Manually setup”, Outlook profile including Exchange proxy connection will be setup automatically. Only after you see the configuring finished successfully and click Finish, Outlook will start to try Outlook Anywhere connection. Fiona

So, my suggestion is: 1. Verify the autodiscover URL on the problematic computer (the expected result is error code 600). 2. Try as the picture above to see if you are able to setup the profile automatically (verify the profile via Control Panel/Mail/show Profile, click try offline if Otulook Anywhere does not work). 3. After the profile is setup, try to see if you are able to connect via HTTPS. hope it is working. Fiona

OK, I see the picture too. As the error message shown, you need to close Outlook, and create a new profile from Control Panel/Mail/Show Profile/Add. please take a check. Note that we are not able to add two Exchange account in Outlook. If it is Outlook 2010, we may add the addtional mailbox account from Account settings/more settings/advance (I did not test it for Outlook Anywhere, please take a try and let me know the result, thanks).Fiona

I'm using Office 2011 with only 1 Pop 3 account. Outlook was closed when I get the error above. It appears shortly after I enter my network user name and password after clicking next on the Add New Account dialogue window. Thanks

You have a POP3 account setup in Outlook and you would like to add an Exchange account, right? Please launch Task Manager and kill Outlook.exe if there is.Fiona

Yes that is correct, however I had already checked Task Manager and Outook was not running at the time I was attempting to add the Exchange account. thanks

Hi, I've tried from another computer and get the same message. Interestingly I can't configure Outlook on a computer within our network either. I get a message saying that "An Encrypted Connection to your mail server is not available. Click Next to attempt an unencrypted connection."
October 20th, 2011 11:02pm

That means you have encryption enabled on the outlook client but on the server its disabled. check these settings on Outlook client. Makes sure that, that check box is unchecked. Thanks Fiona and Gulab, I've now solved the issues with Outloook Anywhere. The last piece of the puzzle was editing the hosts file on the exchange server as per instructions below. Comment out the line “:::1 localhost” Add the following two lines: <IPv4 address> <hostname of the computer> <IPv4 address> <FQDN of the computer> Thanks, Adam
