Pictures in Gal
How do I insert a picture of a user into their account so it can be viewed in the GAL? Exchange 2003

Hi, Not possible, Remember that the gal is a subset of the information in active directory - do you really want to have pictures in AD if it were possible?? That would make AD much bigger and therefore more replication between domain controllers. Leif

hello, my company is trying to do the same. I understand the problems related to replication; but would it be possible to just create a link to the actual picture? I've seen many articles that relate to MOSS 2007 but since we have not rolled it out yet I cannot go that route. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have found that if I have a duplicate contact set up in my contacts folder - with a picture (a contact with the same email address as a member of the GAL), then email received from that persondisplays with the picture. This is obviously a difficult thing to administer since every addition to the GAL would require a manual creation of a similar contact in a contacts folder on each machine... Does anyone have a suggestion such as a shared contacts Public Folder which could contain the neccessaryGAL duplicatesand pictures? ....That just might work! Obviously not ideal for a 1400 employee situation...but may be a good workaround for a small office. Cheers

Yup! It works....I set up a shared contacts folder in the public folders, and now I just create a new contact there for each employee in the GAL (only about 40, in my case). Messages from the employees now display with their picture....without affecting AD. Not a bad work-around...

Actually the default Active Directory schema contains a few attributes which can store images in user objects: thumbnailPhoto and the newer jpegPhoto. The problem is that Windows includes no native way to insert photos into these attribute or retreive them. There are a few custom solutions out there to deal with that, both scripted solutions and packaged products: http://www.arricc.net/active-directory-photos-sharepoint.php http://www.exclaimer.com/products/ad-pictures.aspx I persoanlly use the Contacts approach to do this for a handful of users but I've yet to see an enterprise attempt to use photos in a company-wide directory. It could have a large impact on replication traffic as a small thumbnail image could increase each user object in size ten-fold.

Fuserkill, I only ensured that the "Shared Contacts" pubic folder was set as an Outlook Address book under the folder's properties. Did you do that? Cheers

I'm using Outlook 2010, after creating contacts in a Contacts Public Folder and inserting their picture there I can see them, but my collegue can't! He can see the photos in shared folders but when he receives mails (or reads old mails) no picture is displayed for him... he has read permissions on public folder... any idea? (I don't want to put picutres into AD!)

We have a free product available from our website that makes this very easy. http://www.exclaimer.com/products/outlook-photos/Default.aspx

The way we handled it was to create a Contact list in the Public folders. We also gave an Admin who was the person that took a picture of all new hires full rights to the Contact list. She would then asign the new pictures to the coresponding Contact in the Public Folders. The only step to get them to work then is for the user in Outlook to switch to Folder View > navigate to the newly created Contact list > right click on the list and choose Properties > switch to the Outlook Address Book tab > check the box thay says "show this folder as an e-mail address book". Now when you receive a message from the email addresses in that Contact list their picture will display in the upper right corner of the message.
