Please help in getting an auto-reply to work
I'm looking to set up an automatic bounceback for a user who's no longer in our organzation (does not have a mailbox). I am not interested in setting up a mailbox, as this would be additional licensing. I have tried creating a Mail Contact with his old email address, but the transport rule does not seem to work for outside senders, only internal users. I tried using a public folder, but I can't wrap my head around getting the condition and condition.addresses strings to work with a public folder. Any ideas?

In most cases, shared and resource mailboxes do not require a CAL as they are not associated with an active user. I would check with your licensing rep to confirm, but thats generally the rule.

Hi there, thanks for the response - it's not Exchange CALs we're worried about, it's our own billing, and the Exchange Antivirus license.

He has about 8 email aliases, so that way would be a last resort; but i also did not see that option in the GUI, nor have I yet looked in to it for EMS. Can anyone provide sample powershell cmdlets?

Use "when the message header contains specific words" and enter the smtp address of your user.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Note that you arent creating a true auto-reply when using a built-in hub transport rule. Rather, you will be rejecting the message with a SMTP status code and response.

Hi How about use this condition"when any of the recipients in the To or Cc fields People" and in People Add "External E-Mail Address" In Action, use "send rejection message to sender with enhanced status code" and type your "rejection messaage" such as "'This E-mail address is no longer in use. Please contact manager@domain.com", enhanced status code with "5.7.1" Hope that helps CheersZi Feng TechNet Community Support
