Preparing exististing Exchange and AD for a partial company split
My company is undergoing a partial split, where a part of the company is going under a different name and becoming somewhat (but not entirely) seperate. They will have their own DNS domain name and want their e-mail addresses to reflect that. What is the recommended setup? Keep 1 AD domain and have Exchange 2007 handle e-mail for both, or split everything and create a new AD domain in the forest and setup a seperate Exchange infrastructure? Thanks is advance

Hi, Please understand that one forest can only setup one Exchange organization. it's not possible to setup another Exchange organization in the previous forest. So what's your mean about setting up a separate Exchange infrastructure in the forest? If you want to restructure your company environment, I recommend ADMT v3 which should hope a lot for migration issues. Meanwhile, since it is a directory service issue more related, I also recommend you post AD side issue to Windows Server Forum. I've been in this situation before and I don't believe you have a technical decision as much as a business one. I would start by just modifying the OU structure to represent the different companies and then making a new recipient update policy. The question really comes down to: do they want to be able to access shared resources? If so, keeping them all together in one domain/forest would be ideal, and its a pain to accomplish this without. My situation, I had a law office that broke out and for legal reasons they couldn't be on the same "network". So what I did was create a separate SBS installation and migrated 1/2 of the users here. This also worked out because they later moved to different offices and it was easy to pick them up separately and move one at a time to their respective homes. But this is a question you should have with your management. From an administration point of view, keeping it together is much easier to manage.
