Problem changing a distribution group to a shared mailbox
I need some help in figuring out an issue I have with Exchange 2012. I was asked to change a distribution group into a shared mailbox. I deleted the distribution group and created the shared mailbox. I added the users and it all works
fine apart from they need the email address for the distribution group to forward to the shared mailbox when people send emails to it. I added the email to the shared mailbox as an alias. The issue is that when I test it still sees that email
as a distribution email and sends a non delivery email when trying to send an email.
Is this a replication issue and I just need to wait until the Exchange server updates the address book? I did try on my Outlook client to update the address book and it did but still failed to receive a test email. Am I missing something?
Any help is much appreciated.

Send the email from OWA and see whether you still get the NDR. If it works the problem is most likely an issue with the Outlook OAB (or you just need to wait until it next updates).Tony www.activedir.org blog:www.open-a-socket.com

Are you selecting the mailbox from the GAL? Or from the OAB? Or from
the Outlook name completion cache? Or from a local contact in the
users Contacts folder?
You could add the legacyExchangeDN value from the DL to the new
mailbox as a X500 address. That should fix the problem if the NDR says
the reason is ExRecipientUnknown (the important bit is the "Ex" at the
beginning of the reason -- I don't remember if the "Unknown" is the
right value for the last part).

Hi Michael,
Do you want to delete the DG and create a shared mailbox with same
name?
If yes, you just need to delete the DG(DG@contoso.com) first, then create a shared mailbox with the following cmdlet:
New-Mailbox -name DG -UserPrincipalName DG@contoso.com -shared
Please check whether it works in Outlook online or OWA as MVPs said.
And when you enter the name in the To field in Outlook and click ctrl+k to Check Names, the name should be resolved to be a normal mailbox rather than a DG(+ in front).

Thank you for the replies everyone. Really appreciated. I have scrapped the work and went back to a distribution group with the same settings as before. I have checked it works through OWA and the group is there. When searching for
the group in Outlook 2010 it still fails as the old cached distro group is appearing (I would of hoped it would work as I used the same settings) and it bounces back the email. I can get it to work using the full email address. I take it will work
when the GAL fully updates which I believe is once every 24 hours. Is there a way to force this straight away. Lastly what happens to the old cached email will that sync to the one I've created or will they need to delete that entry (Same email).
You will have to bare with me as it's a long time since I've used Exchange so please dumb down you answers as I'm not fully with Exchange terminology having been stuck using Lotus Notes for a long time (Still wake up in a cold sweat at night thinking about
Lotus Notes).

You can force the OAB to update whenever you want to. Assuming the CAS
won't pick up tht changes for maybe a couple of hours you might want
to restart the Microsoft Exchange File Distribution service on the OAB
generation server. Once the CAS has the new OAB files you can force
Outlook to download a the OAB.

If you got a NDR the message won't be resent unless you open the NDR
and click the "Send Again" button.

Okay. I'm naked if you are.
