Problem using POP3 E2K7
Hi, I have enabled POP3 service on my E2K7 multi role server (HubT, CAS, Mailbox), we have also enabled the POP3 protocol for specified users using the management shell. But we can't retrieve e-mails from a client computer using for example windows mail in Vista. We are not able to authenticate and error messages like these below: Account: 'account name', Server: 'mail.mydomain.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Command is not valid in this state.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC91 Account: 'account name', Server: 'mail.mydomain.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Command is not valid in this state.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18 Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'account name', Server: 'mail.mydomain.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F As you can see we have tried to use both secure pop3 (995), Secure Password Authentication, but with no further success. Do you have a clue how we should set-up the mail clients for pop3 (authentication, accountnamesetc), should we perform some more configuration on the CAS or Hubtransport servers? Thanks in advance! Regards,Richard

By default Exchange 2007 POP3 Service use secure Login type(TCP Port 995) Use Get-POPSettings to verify your POP3 login type. Suggest you change the pop3 authentication to Paintext and try again in client, and make sure it's ok then change to other lgoin type.

Thanks Jammy for your posting! We have tried using all three LoginTypes with no further success. We always get re-prompted to enter the username/password to authenticate against the e2k7 server for pop3 retrevial. We have tried different settings for the account in our pop3 client (windows mail and ol express) but get the same response. Any other suggestions to test? Kr, Richard

Every time after you change POP3 LoginType need restart POP3 service to take effect, have you? Your POP3 client is in Local LAN or WAN to test this? In CAS Server role try to telnet localhost 110 or 995 port , is success?

Yes I'm doing test from a computer on the same subnet running in workgroup mode (not part of the local domain). When running telnet tests I can test to see that the CAS server answers "Ready" whentelnetting to port 110 (only black screen when typing 995). I can only use thethe USER/PASS command when running in "PlainTextLogin" mode, but it will not for some reason accept our password? when running the USER/PASS command suing the other logintypes we receive messageslike "-Error, commadn used in invalid state..". I have triednearly all possible settings with my pop3 client (windows mail on Vista) for example using SPA and setting the POP3 to ssl, but with no further success. Always get prompted tore-enter my login credentials. Are there special need of a really good password running the pop3/imap services?? Thanks again for taking your time. Kr, Richard

Something is not right with the pop3 on E07. Our connector just stopped accepting logons. After a restart, it worked again. How do you report errors like this to MS?

For what it's worth: I too was having connection problems using OE 6 on a Windows 2000 Pro box. Using PowerShell, I changed the logintype to plaintextlogin and restarted the POP3 service and I was able to connect using OE on the Windows 2000 Pro machine and downloaded all of the email.

Hi Folks! It is not enough to enable the "Secure Login Authentication" in your Outlook Express!Try this one: GotoTools - Accounts - yourPOPaccout - Advanced - Set POPport: 995 (not 110!!)- Set: 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)'Never mind if you have installed an SSL certificate or not!Good Luck!Regards

I was having the same problem. But I've noticed that when I try with a password account where there is no special characters like @ or, the pop3 accept the connection (with or without ssl and no matter how I set the LoginType option of POPSettings). So, for me, I think that the new MSExchangepop3 service has some difficulties with password where thereare special characters. Maybe it's a bug in the new MSExchangePop3 service.

Hi, It also seems that administrator account can't use the pop3 service very well, and that combined with plaintextlogon and a morecomplex password solved our problem. Thanks, /Richard
