Problem with SMTP and Child Domain Controller
I have a network with one child domain. The Exchange 20003 server is in the parent domain. I wanted to be able to add mailboxes to the child domain user accounts so a Microsoft engineer stepped me through how to do that. However whenever the Exchange server is rebooted the domain controller in the child domain seems to take over as the SMTP server and mail is no longer delivered. The only way I have been able to fix it is to reboot the child domain controller. That would not be all to bad an issue if the system was in the same server room but it is 2.5 hours away. How can I setup the systems so that when my exchange server is rebooted it takes on the role as the SMTP server when it is back up and running again?
Thanks

Hi,
You need to explain your setup some more.
What exactly is it that the Microsoft rep told you do do?
Is SMTP installed on the child domain domain controller?
Normally all mailboxes should be located on the exchange server and only thing pointing to the domain controller would be a recipient update service.

Could you please check if your child domain exchange server is a Master server or a Member server?Routing Groups>First Routing Group>Members

The system in the child domain is a Member server in exchange. However I can't access or see any of the Administrative groups the way I can on my XP desktop. I did not want to run exchange on the server since it is a domain controller, I only wanted the ability to add exchange account from ADUC and look at the Exchange server if I had to from that office.
