Problems finding a user in exchange when setting up workstation
I have added a new user to Active Directory and made sure I checked the box for creating an exchange mailbox. I have opened up the properties of another user in active directory that has a working mailbox and the fields are identical, except for the user name differences obviously. My problem is when I log into the new users workstation to set-up outlook, type in the exchange server name and type the first letter of the users name, then click check names the name is not found. I can see other names that start with the same letter though. If I type the entire name in and click ok it throws up an error that says, " The name could not be matched to a name in the address list." Do I need to somehow update the exchange address list from the server? I can log into the network with this user name and see the shared drives so I know I entered the active directory data properly, but the user is still unknown to the exchange server. Please Help!! I am running Windows Server 2003 (SBS) Brett

Has the RUS update service run? If you are on a good user and look for this other user in the Address Book do they show up?Mark Morowczynski|MCT| MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:ES, SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

I am new to this so could you tell me where the address book is? Also what do you mean RUS service?(Rookie IT Networking Major) Brett

Address book is in your Outlook (book icon). User should appear in the GAL a few minutes after it has been mail enabled. You should open address book, select Global Address List and then right click on it to check properties. If you will see a DC name - you are on-line modeand the user should be visible. If you will see a file name, you are working with Outlook with cached mode - user will appear after Offline Address Book generation.RUS is a Recipient Update Service. This is a service on Exchange 2003 that is responsible for applying Exchange attributes for AD accounts that are marked as mailbox enabled. Check this article: http://www.msexchange.org/articles/Troubleshooting-Exchange-Recipient-Update-Service-RUS.htmlfor RUS troubleshooting.

Hi Brett, How things are going? Please access the mailbox via OWA, can you successfully log on? Please check the recipient update service settings at Exchange System Manager | Recipients | recipient update service | make sure update interval is always run. Thanks, Elvis

Hello: I have deleted the user and computer from active directory and started over. Now I have the user and workstation in the server manager and in active directory. I ran the setup on the workstation and everything seems to be fine; except outlook, I "updated" RUS and it still won't find the name I added. Really weird; I must be missing something very simple.. Do I have to do anything else on the workstation for it to recognize the name? PLEASE HELP!! lol(Rookie IT Networking Major) Brett

Hi Brett,Can you dump the user details with the help of LDP.exe and see if it has all the exchange attributes stampped correctly? Additonally, just check to see if the user resides in some specific OU where the security inheritance is blocked. If yes, then please allow the security inheritance to propagate through.Milind Naphade | MCTS:M | http://www.msexchangegeek.com

Sorry for the delay in getting back to all of you. It ended up being some sort of error that wasn't letting update services run properly. An outside IT source ended up fixing it remotely. Unfortunately I don't have the specifics of the issue. Grrrrr.. Brett(Rookie IT Networking Major) Brett
