Hi all I'm trying to install Exchange SP1 on a 2007 server and it always stops with an error that *.domain.com and *.domain.ch already exist. Researching the problempoints me to the accepted domain configs. I have currently 3 accepted domains, namely *.domain.com, *.domain.ch and domain.int. Some advice suggests to delete the two with *.domain and create new ones without the wildcard but I'm not sure what this would have an effect on as we also have it set up so that when I create a new user mailbox, the user gets 4 accepted email addresses in their account config, lastname@domain.com, lastname@domain.ch, firstname.lastname@domain.com, and firstname.lastname@domain.ch. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this and what effect it will have on the rest of the configs? Many thanks

Hello Greg, From your description I can see that you are using domain.com, domain.ch and domain.int in recipient policy to accept mailfor but not child domain like abc.domain.ch so if you give *.domain.ch or domain.ch in accepted domain it doesnt matter. Even in Exchange 2007RTM version(without SP1) wildcard* isn't effectivein accepted domain while creating e-mail address policy for any subdomain and you required to add it explicitly. Reference: If you are using the release to manufacturing (RTM) version of Microsoft ExchangeServer2007, and you want to use a subdomain as part of an e-mail address policy, do not use wildcard characters. You must explicitly specify each subdomain that you want to use in an e-mail address policy as an accepted domain. This restriction does not apply if you are using Exchange2007 Service Pack 1 or higher. - How to Create Accepted Domains

Look at your Exchagne 2003 recipient policies. Do the current policies that define accepted SMTP domains say "domain.com" or "*.domain.com". I suspect they need to say "domain.com" and explicitly define the sub-domains you want. Run the Exchange Best Practices Analyzer (www.exbpa.com) and then select the E2K7 Readiness test and see if it catches this.

Run the following command, and send the txt file to me. get-accepteddomain | fl >c:\domain.txt 3. Send the ExchangeSetup.log file that locate at <systemdrive>\ExchangeSetupLogs\ foler to v-rocwan@micosoft.com. 4. On Exchange server 2007, according to the following steps run Exbpa tool, send the .xml file to me, a) Open EMC, Open EXBPA from toolbox; b) Connect to Active Directory; c) Input the name of DC; make sure you are using Exchange Administrator account and Domain User account d) Click "Connect to the Active Directory Server" e) Select entire Organization as the Scan Scope, type "Health Check" f) Click "Start Scanning" g) When the scan finishes, Click "View a report" in the left pane and click the report in the right pane h) Click "Export report", select the type as XML (will save entire data file). i) Compress the XML and send it to v-rocwan@microsoft.com. Thanks for the quick replies. @ Amit and Jim I thought it might be something like that. The server was set up by an external consultant and as we are a small company he probably thought it would be okay to set it up like that in case we added subdomains (which is not the case). I tried to delete one of the accepted domains and it came with an error that it was being used as part of the email policy. As I mentioned earlier the consultant configured the default email policy to add 4 email addresses to each account. Any idea what would happen when I delete these from the default policy so that I can delete the accepted domains? I take it the policy is only used when I create a new mailbox, which I wont be doing for a while. @ Rock-Wang Thanks for offer. I will get the files to you as soon as I can.

Hi Greg, I think that shouldnt give you any problem but here is another way if it helps. I checked in my lab and this has changed accepted domain from *.domain.com to domain.com, you may need to test into test env first. Open ADSIEdit.msc -> Configuration -> Services -> Microsoft Exchange -> <Your ORG Name> -> Transport Settings -> Accepted Domains ->Select accepted domain which has * & open Properties -> Select msExchAcceptedDomainName -> Edit and change the name from *.domain.ch to domain.ch

Dear customer: Accepted domains are any Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) namespace for which a Microsoft Exchange organization sends and receives e-mail. Accepted domains include those domains for which the Exchange organization is authoritative. An Exchange organization is authoritative when it handles mail delivery for recipients in the accepted domain. Accepted domains also include domains for which the Exchange organization receives mail and then relays to an e-mail server that is outside the Exchange organization for delivery to the recipient. Before you remove an accepted domain, verify that the domain name is not referenced in any e-mail address policy. After you remove an accepted domain, the Exchange organization no longer accepts e-mail messages that are addressed to recipients in that domain. If you remove an authoritative accepted domain, e-mail address policies that reference that domain are no longer valid. You cannot remove the default authoritative accepted domain.
