Problems removing Exchange 2003 from 2010 environment
I'm attempting to follow this article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg576862.aspx Exchange 2010 has already been installed for about a month, and we have had the 2003 servers offline for 2 weeks to see if we missed anything. Nothing has been reported. The only item I know we lost is mailbox manager functionality for two generic mailboxes. Public folders were moved in early August and all mailboxes have been moved as of mid-August. Our address book generation server is the 2010 mailbox server. Mail flow & services were working correctly with the old 2003 servers offline. Recipient policies have been upgraded to OPATH with the exception of two (for which I have a separate thread). When attempting to delete the 2003 public store, I see that somehow only one particular public calendar didn't get replicated. The replication tab says it is replicating to the 2010 Public Folder replica, and I changed it to always run as urgent priority. The size is 1144KB. I tried multiple times to move the replica yesterday and it's still there today. The 2010 PF Mgmt Console does list the same public calendar. If I use the get-public folderstatistics command, it shows: --- [PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-PublicFolderStatistics -identity "\Conference Room and Van Reservations\Conference Room B - Warranty Conference Room" | fl RunspaceId : 213fc164-0972-4a76-bcab-a3f57476edd5 AdminDisplayName : Conference Room B - Warranty Conference Room AssociatedItemCount : 0 ContactCount : 2 CreationTime : 7/22/2005 9:28:36 AM DeletedItemCount : 0 EntryId : 000000001A447390AA6611CD9BC800AA002FC45A03005A122AAB37D28A40A6EFF41ED3AD62F10000000CC8FA0000 ExpiryTime : FolderPath : Conference Room and Van Reservations\Conference Room B - Warranty Conference Room IsDeletePending : False ItemCount : 1264 LastAccessTime : 9/20/2011 3:37:38 AM LastModificationTime : 9/19/2011 3:22:19 PM LastUserModificationTime : LastUserAccessTime : 9/20/2011 8:06:40 AM Name : Conference Room B - Warranty Conference Room OwnerCount : 2 TotalAssociatedItemSize : 0 B (0 bytes) TotalDeletedItemSize : 0 B (0 bytes) TotalItemSize : 983.4 KB (1,006,988 bytes) ServerName : StorageGroupName : DatabaseName : 2010 Public Folder Database Identity : 000000001A447390AA6611CD9BC800AA002FC45A03005A122AAB37D28A40A6EFF41ED3AD62F10000000CC8FA0000 MapiIdentity : 000000001A447390AA6611CD9BC800AA002FC45A03005A122AAB37D28A40A6EFF41ED3AD62F10000000CC8FA0000 OriginatingServer : fl2000-exmbx001.ced-concord.com IsValid : True --- I had temporarily removed the 2003>2010 routing group connector from the 2003 mailbox server before shutting it down for the first time. The 2010>2003 connector has not yet been removed. I recreated the 2003>2010 connector yesterday to see if that was the problem. It doesn't appear that has helped. I enabled maximum logging on the Public Folder service but nothing has jumped out at me in the application log at this time. I tried re-running the MoveAllReplicas.ps1 script and it didn't generate any errors, but the PF instance remains. I also tried to remove Exchange from our two FrontEnd servers and both generated errors and failed. I first tried it through Add/Remove programs, then tried it by running it from a copy of the Exchange 2003 RTM CD copied to a local folder path. You must have both routing group connectors, one for each direction, in place for public folder replication to happen. I suggest you recreate the connector you deleted until you have resloved your public folder issue.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

You must admit that was easy to miss in that long post. On the Exchange 2010 server, run: Update-PublicFolder -Identity "\Path_to_hold-out_folder" Also, you could try adding an item to the folder in Outlook to see if that jogs things loose. Watch the event log to see if there are any reports of problems with the folder replicating. Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Hi Jim, Above cmdlets has some issue. The identity should be "\Conference Room and Van Reservations\Conference Room B - Warranty Conference Room\" Per your information, the public folder seems a resource Room, if you do not use it in the exchange 2010 email system and use new room in the exchange 2010 server, you could not care the publicfolder. If you confirm all the other public folders already replicated successfully, you could use the Exfolder to check them. If you still want to use the public folder, you could export it as pst, and then import it through outlook to the new publicfolder on exchange 2010 server. Then we could remove the exchange 2003 server. Some information for you: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb288905(EXCHG.80).aspx Regards! Switching the slashes in the path allowed the command to finish successfully. In Outlook, I copied the current PF calendar to a new PF calendar (presumably it would store it in the 2010 PF), then deleted the original PF calendar, then altered the heirarchy so the path is the same as it was before. Content is there, but so is the instance in ESM. Assuming the new PF is now correctly on the 2010 replica, how can I force removal of the instance and/or PF database on 2003 ESM so I can move ahead with troubleshooting the other steps? Edit: I just refreshed the Instances folder and now it's gone, but still shows in Outlook. Apparently it just took some time to update the Instances folder. When I attempt to delete the 2003 PF store, it gives me a warning, and then lists three entries: our 2010 PF store, and the 2 OWA 2003 entries. I select one of the 2003 PF entries (expecting to need to do this again for the other) and click OK, then the it completely deletes the whole PF store. I removed the 2003>2010 connector in ESM. I'll attempt to remove 2003 from our two 2003 OWA servers, then the 2003 mailbox server. Edit: Both 2003 OWA servers apparently have a partial uninstall from the previous attempt. It is not shown in Add/Remove Programs, but ESM works from the Start menu. All three 2003 servers are still listed in ESM. Do I need to do anything further on the OWA servers for a proper removal from the environment? Do I need to delay removing Exchange from the 2003 mailbox server based upon the OWA server status?

Hi Jim, How about check the servers through EMC? Are the removed exchange server still listed in it? If there are not any mailbox or needed information on the exchange 2003 BE server, you could remove it. No need to delay. We just need confirm there are no exchange 2003 server information left after the remove through the exchange 2010 EMC. Please follow the link, after removing all the exchange 2003 server, if there are still some, we need to remove related information through ADSIEDIT. That was my mistake, I misread your post. All three 2003 servers are still listed in ESM. We're not aware of anything which precludes us from just turning off the 2003 servers with the exception of remnants causing future problems. Can we just remove the references to Exchange 2003 in AD by using ADSIEdit in article 833396?

It's better to remove Exchange 2003 servers and other objects using the Exchange 2003 System Manager. Do NOT remove the Exchange 2003 administrtative group unless you want to break free-busy for moved mailboxes.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

ESM lists all three servers. If I try to remove OWA001 or OWA002, ESM tells me that server is still active. The stores under the mailbox server are gone, but they are still listed under the OWA servers with white circle icons before the name. Servers OWA001 and OWA002 do not list Exchange 2003 in Add/Remove Programs, but it is listed on the 2003 mailbox server.
