Program used to create object is Package

when I attempt to copy and paste a shorctut to a file on a network drive into an MS-word 2007 File i get an error message that states 'the program used to create this object is Package.  That Program is not installed on yourt computer.  To Edit this object, you must install a program that can open that object.

I can paste the shortcut without error if I reload the original Office 2007 without patches and updates.

What do I need to load to or change to allow this copy/paste operatiion to function with the latest patches and updates?

1. Under normal circumstances you should not be embedding pictures in a Word document as OLE objects. There are circumstances where this might be necessary, but in general, no. Pictures should be inserted using Insert-Picture-From file, not Insert-Object-from file.

2. The major reason for using OLE for pictures is better resolution (the picture looks better). But when you use OLE you must have a program that acts as an OLE Server. The OLE Server essentially opens the picture and processes it (imagine opening a picture in a graphics program - that's what has to happen). So you have to make sure that everyone who's going to work with and print this document has a program capable of providing this service.

It appears that your machine has a program that can handle this - up to a certain point. No telling what this might be, especially since you don't provide any information about which version of Office is installed on the machine.

3. Word is not designed to support graphics editing - it's a Word processor. Some early versions of Word provided a very rudimentary, internal graphics editor; one more recent version of Office provided an editor. All of these have been discontinued in Office 2007. This is not something you can rely on for automation or for working with documents, generally. Graphics editing should be done in a program dedicated to that purpose.

This answer has nothing to do with the question.  The question was about inserting a shortcut into a word document while the answer is about graphics.

Here's a link to what you must do to insert a file shortcut into a Word doc:

(you'll have to cut and paste that link since Microsoft wouldn't let me submit a link)

Jgrnwld is right: None of the comments addresses the question of how to embed a shortcut in a Word document.  In fact the more you read about what you can  insert in a Word document the less you hear about embedding a shortcut since they are mostly about embedding files or icons.  You'd think Word would provide a "Quote" facility like every other software language has.  What gives -- why are members of this Forum avoiding the question?

By the way, jgrnwld does the same thing as everyone else.  The link he includes also does not address the question of embedding anything but a file or a graphic in a Word document (as you can see from the link's title "insert-document-icon-word")

Is the topic taboo?  Or is the answer a secret?  How about it you computer types -- what gives?

I am surprised that none of the comments addresses the question of how to embed a shortcut in a Word document but only about how to embed graphics.  You'd think Word would provide a "Quote" facility like every other software language has.  What gives -- why are members of this Forum avoiding the question?

By the way, one of the respondents raises the same point as I did, when he writes

"This answer has nothing to do with the question.  The question was about inserting a shortcut into a word document while the answer is about graphics."

But his proposal does the same thing as everyone else's.  The link he includes does not address the question of embedding anything but a graphic in a Word document (as you can see from the link's title "insert-document-icon-word")

Is the topic taboo?  Is the answer a secret?  What gives?  Why is everyone ignoring the problem/question?
