Prompting for Credentials

Hi,

I go to a webpage showing the performance of fund managers http://www.trustnet.com/Managers/AlphaManagers.aspx

It does not require a username or password.

When I try and link that data into Excel 2010 using Get External Data  - From Web, it asks for credentials that I do not have.

This problem also exists in Excel 2013 but in Excel 2007, I am not prompted.

Any suggestions to fix this problem?

Thanks

Sinkers

Hello Sinkers,

If you use Office 2010, 2013 or Office 365 with Professional Plus or Excel Standalone, you should consider using Power Query add-in. It also has web import functionality which will probably work better for your scenario.

The add-in is free. You can download it here.

Hi Gil,

Many thanks for quick response.

After installing Power Query and using the 'Get External Data From Web' option I see 2 Workbook Queries: (http://i.imgur.com/eU8xePN.jpg)
1) Tools: Search for fund managers (http://i.imgur.com/B9bU1FJ.jpg)
2) Document (http://i.imgur.com/2bCbf9E.jpg)

However, in neither case do I see any actual data.

Do you have any suggestions for getting the table of data from the link into Excel.

Many thanks again,

Sinkers

Could you please specify which data you would need from that page? Some tables (like the one in this page) cannot be easily extracted by Power Query. But let's try after I know which data you seek in the table.

Hi Gil,

Thanks again for replying.

Unless you have a account, until you are logged in, you will see a different page to me.

If you have the time, if you could create an account (it's free) and add a couple of funds to the watchlist you should then be able to see something like this http://imgur.com/x2uQKpS It is that table I would like to import into Excel. The URL for this table is http://www.trustnet.com/Tools/Portfolio/Watchlist.aspx

When using the regular data import (ie not power query), unless you are logged in you will be prompted for a username and password. Unfortunately, these are not the Windows credentials that Excel prompts you for.

When using the PowerQuery, one is not prompted for a username / password at all.

Interestingly, importing the data (without Power Query) into Excel 2010 worked perfectly until last September when it began asking for credentials and it still works fine on Excel 2007.

Many thanks again.

Hi Sinkers,

According to your description, I suppose that the website use encryption to offer protection. So when you tried to get data from this website, it needed a username/password. I tested your issue in my own computer, and I found it worked fine in excel 2007, it needed to enter credentials in excel 2010 and 2013.

File operations that use Basic authentication over a non-SSL HTTP connection are disabled in Office 2010 and Office 2013 applications. So you cant get the data from that website, you can try using HTTPS instead of HTTP to access the website. I tried this method but failed. I suppose you need to contact the website sever administrator for helping.

Hope its helpful.

Hi guGuuuMy,

Your response has been incredibly useful. Thank you for going to the effort of checking and confirming my findings. The strange thing is that it did work in Excel 2010 until last September. It seems strange that the website sever administrator would change from an SSL HTTP connection to a non-SSL HTTP connection.

Hi Sinkers,

I find a article to talk about downloading data from web server failed in office 2010 and 2013, I feel this article similar your problem. And it offered methods to solve this issue. I tried its methods in my own computer, but the issue still exists. How about trying these methods in your own computer? Maybe it's helpful to you. :)

Hi guGuuuMy,

Funnily enough, I found that page after your earlier email and I tried it too, but, like you, Excel still prompted for credentials.

Thanks guGuuuMy

I did contact the website support people when this problem first arose last September and they stated that they did not support the importing of data into Excel. They had no problem with people doing it, but they just wouldn't support it!
