Query Based DG by Database
I am trying to create a query based distribution group based on the Exchange 2003 SP2 database that a user is on. I know that I can create an OU in AD but we havemany users and our current process only requires moving the Exchange account to an inactive accounts database where they are retained for 30 days - the AD accounts of the term'ed users are all over the place. Any solution that winds up creatinga DG based on the users in a certain database is very much appreciated. I have looked online for several days and talked to a bunch of people in the office and everybody agrees it can be done since AD shows both the DB location and the AD object butnobody is solid enough programatically to point me in the right direction.Respectfully, JR

Ok, let me drive through the steps....- New -> QBDG.- Give QBDG Name, alias will come automatically, select Next.- Select Customize filter, click on customize button.- In Find drop down button, select Exchange Recipients.- Select only "Users with Exchange Mailbox" in General tab.- In Storage tab, select the database for which you want to create QBDG.- Click on "Find Now" to verify that it is serching correct users.- Click "Ok", "Next", "Finish".Hey, you have a QBDG for an Exchange database!!!! :)Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Never mind - found the unmarked as answer button. One less dumb question.

JRedded,Just to simply the things for you, mailboxes those appear in EMC are a reference to a location in mailbox store. However, QBDL aquires all the data based on a LDAP filter (the one you wrote for this QBDL) and queries active directory to find these objects. When a mailbox is disconnected (exchange attributes removed) the query wont find the objects in Active Directory and will not include those objects as members of that DL. So in short, a QBDL will not show up the disconnected or deleted mailboxes neither will try to reconnect them. I hope that answers your query. :-)M-Milind Naphade

Yes, I agree with Milind, disconnected mailboxes are not attached with any AD objects so those could be catched up by LDAP query.Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com
