Query Based Distribution Group
Hello,I've a problem with the "preview" tab from my QBDG.I can configure the ldap query and showa correct result, but on the "preview tab", I've nothing....I'm using the "Departmentnumber" for the LDAPQuery. If I'm using the "Description" for my query it's working for the query and the preview tab!!Why I can't see the query result on my preview tab.ThanksSteve

I assume that is an exchange 2003 environment since theres no Preview tab in the exchange 2007
The issue is, you cant set the QBDG filter by using "Departmentnumber", right?
Theres no Departmentnumber field in the AD object, only Department field
I tested in the lab, create a QBDG for the user in the Exchange department (Windows server 2003 SP2 + Exchange server 2003 SP2)
a. Launch ADUC
b. In a OU called Exchange, right-click the OU, select New, Query-based Distribution Group
c. In the wizard, set name for QBDG, click Next
d. Click Browse button to choose the OU to apply to filter, select Customize filter, click Customize button
e. In the Advanced tab, click Field button>User>Department
f. In the Condition field, choose Starts with; in the Value field, input Exchange; click Add button, click OK
g. I can see user who belongs to Exchange department in the Preview tab
My LDAP filter: (&(!cn=SystemMailbox{*})(&(&(&(& (mailnickname=*) (| (&(objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user)(!(homeMDB=*))(!(msExchHomeServerName=*)))(&(objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user)(|(homeMDB=*)(msExchHomeServerName=*)))(&(objectCategory=person)(objectClass=contact))(objectCategory=group)(objectCategory=publicFolder)(objectCategory=msExchDynamicDistributionList) )))(objectCategory=user)(department=Exchange*))))
Troubleshooting:
1. Where did you find the Departmentnumber field, can you provide your procedure so I can test it in the lab?
2. Can you try to create the QBDG by using the procedure above?
3. If the issue still persists by using the procedure above, please check the Department field of the users who need to be filtered

Please check if we can locate DepartmentNumber attribute in the AD by using ADSI Editor
a. Launch ADSI Editor
b. Expand to Domain->DC=DomainName,DC=com, locate an user (CN=DisplayName) from any OU, right-click it and click Properties
c. In the Attribute Editor tab, check Show only attributes that have values option. Then, locate the DepartmentNumber attribute
If we can locate the DepartmentNumber attribute, my suggestion is: Export this "DepartmentNumber" from users, and then import the values of DepartmentNumber into users other unhidden attribute, like Department or Custom Attribute. So, we can create the QBDL by using the attributes we see in the QBDL creation wizard
Notes: If we cant locate DepartmentNumber attribute via ADSI Editor, please export the attribute from SAP into a txt file, and start with step b below to modify the content
Notes: Before perform the procedure into a product environment, please test it in a virtual lab at first! (My lab for this testing: Windows Server 2003 SP2 + Exchange Server 2003 SP2)
Please use Ldifde to export and modify the value. For example, if I want to import the value of DepartmentNumber into users other unhidden attribute, like Custom Attribute
a. Firstly, Ill export DepartmentNumber attribute:
ldifde -f c:\Exportuser.ldf -s ServerName -d "dc=DomainName,dc=com" -p subtree -r "(objectClass=User)" -l "cn,DepartmentNumber
b. Secondly, open the file Exportuser.ldf by using notepad and change the content to a specific format (refer to Sample Import/Modify File Format table in KB 237677). Basically, I will replace all the words DepartmentNumber with extensionAttribute1 (extensionAttribute1 equals to Custom Attribute 1)
c. Finally, import the file. Then the value of "DepartmentNumber" will be transferred to all users Custom Attribute 1
ldifde -i -f c:\ExportuserChanged.ldf -s ServerName
