Question: Exchange 2003 mailbox management process

My question regarding the Mailbox Management in exchange 2003.
What does a scheduled mailbox management process exactly do when it automatically run everyday ? How is this scheduled processuseful ? and when is it needed ? thanks :-)

It enforces the age and size of different folders of mailboxes where recipient policies applied on.
