Question on Splitting the Server Roles
Hi all,
We currently run Exchange 2007 but will be upgrading to 2010 soon. Currently, we have all roles running on one server (The Mailbox, CAS, and Hub Transport roles). When we move to 2010 we will be splitting these three roles up to three different
servers. Currently all of our users refer to our mail server as mail.XXXX.com in all of their client devices, and since all services are running on one server, they can't go wrong.
So, I'm a bit confused as to what to name which server when we make the transition. For instance, I know the CAS server will be what what they need to get to for OWA and we'll probably name it owa.XXXX.com. But what about for things like PoP
and IMAP? Should I name the HubTransport server maii.XXXX.com and they use that for their incoming and outgoing mail settings?
Any help is appreciated.

Hi, it's good to move on 2010 and split server roles.
I understand users access mailboxes through POP3 and IMAP. In your scenarion you should configure a public facing CAS server, which is the first server role you are going to install and everything will go through it owa, pop3, imap
It would be better to setup and edge server too, if not you need to create the proper send/receive connector for your current smart host you're. You can configure the CAS server as HT server too (and have 2 HT server) and create send/receive connctors there.
Remote users would also have a possibility to look for their settings to configure pop3, imap4 client in terms of which smtp outgoing server they have to use. Please refer to the following article for that:

OWA Outlook.domain.com
outlook Anywhere Outlook.domain.com
ActiveSyn
Outlook.domain.com
IMAP & POP
mail.domain.com
Anything would work so long as there is a proper DNS record created....

Hi,
You could assign any name to mailbox, CAS, and Hub Transport server. Always we name the server accord to our habits.
For example, I would like to name as these:
a. Mail.XXX.com, Hub.XXX.com, and CAS.XXX.com
b. Server1.XXXX.com, Server2.XXXX.com, and Server3.XXXX.com
You could install EMC on any server to manage all the servers, you don’t need to log in one server to manage the special one. and you could identity
the server role according to the services running on each server.

yeah agreed with the above here, i would create two dual role CAS/HUB servers, create a cas array and call it mail.xxxx.com then everything can connect to that.Stew
