Re-sort GAL
One of our customers will be importing several thousand contacts into A.D. via MIIS - I have posted a question about this previously but this is a different question. When the contacts are imported they will obviously appear in the Exchange GAL, which is expected. We will also create a seperate Address List for the contacts but they will still appear in the GAL.My question is - is there any way to sort the GAL so that all of the new contacts appear at the BOTTOM of the GAL when viewed in Outlook rather than merged into the existing user list ? I cannot see any character, apart from Z, which would sort the list alphabetically. Renaming all the contacts to have a Z in front of them is not an option. Thanks

The answer is no. But there are characters other than Z. See here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/exchangesvradmin/thread/0f8d5bb1-3fe0-4716-a60c-95c69f069f82/

Mike - thanks for the response.Yes - it would be easier if I wanted the contacts to appear at the TOP of the GAL - I could just have put any agreed character in front of all the contact names. Unfortunately special characters come before standard letters when sorted so this obviously won't work. Thanks

Yep, but this is by design. You could also restrict access to the default GAL, publishing only the address lists with your filtered criteria.
