Recipient Policy SMTP tiebreaker
We are migrating users from GroupWise into Exchange 2003. The unique username from GroupWise is maintained as the username in Exchange. As each user account is created we have a recipient policy that adds a secondary SMTP address with the format firstname.lastname@domain.com. This works perfectly until we get someone with a duplicate name (eg. John Smith). The first John Smith will get an automatically generated email address of John.Smith@domain.com. Is there a way to put something in the recipient policy to add an incrementingtiebreaker so that the next John Smith that joins the system will get an email address something like John.Smith2@domain.com?

Hi Bruce,
The John.Smith2@domain.com email address will be created automatically without needing to add an incrementing tiebreaker if another John Smith is added to the domain.

When I add a second John Smith (with a unique username) I get the following error message:
Windows cannot create the new user object because the name Smith, John is already in use. Select another name, and try again.

Upon closer examiniation I'm seeing that the John.Smith2@domain.com email addess is being created for the second John Smith. BUT the second John Smith must be created in a different OU than the one containing the original John Smith.
I guess I will have to create a new thread elsewhere in TechNet.

Yes, Bruce, you cannot create John Smith again in the same OU. Nevertheless, you can add the Initials name such as John T. Smith.
