Recovery Storage Groups in Exchange
I had a situation where I needed to restore an old copy of a mailbox into a RSG in Exch 2003. Subsequently we moved everyone from one storage group to another because we wanted to "start from scratch" and cleanup white space. We created a new store, moved everyone to it then deleted the old store. Problem is all my backups reference the old store. So now If I create an RSG and try to attach a store to it the old store isn't offered as a choice (because it was removed). How can I get the old store to show up so I can restore the older data? I tried just adding another store with the same name but the restore fails with "the store is already mounted please use system manger to demount" BE 10d. I don't care about mounting it, all I want are the raw edb files. Ken

Hi, Very strange situation and I think there is just one way to do it and that is Mount RSG > Create PSTs > Import PSTs to outlook > Merge them with Exchange. I know its very hard but there seems to be solution for your problem. Regards. I guess a better way to put it is how do you restore to an RSG if the original store that you backed up is no longer existant on that server? Can you get away with creating a new store with the same name and adding that to the RSG? I tried it and it doesn't seem to work but I'm not sure if it's an issue with Exchange 2003 or BackupExec. But AFAIK the RSG is based on the MDB If you don't get any solution on this I can recommend you a 3rd part tool from ontrack, it's called powercontrols http://www.ontrackpowercontrols.com/Jonas Andersson MCTS: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010 | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010 | MCSE/MCSA Blog: http://www.testlabs.se/blog

Hey Ken, Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp supports Exchange 2010, 2007, 2003, 2000 and 5.5 and can read and open the RAW EDB file without the need for an RSG. Once opened you can Browse, Search, Export to PST, MSG & XML or Recover Mailboxes, Folders, or individual eMails, Appointments, Tasks and all other Messaging items to the original server or to any other Exchange servers mailbox. Re-read your post and appears BE will not let you recover to RSG because the original EDB is missing? BE has an option to recover to an alternate server, so that may be of assistance to you. Troy Werelius Lucid8

Hi, When adding the new database with the same name as the original store, you should ensure "the database can be overwritten by a restore" option is checked and make the database is dismounted. After that, please run the Backup to restore the database. Additionally, you can check the event log if any issue reoccurrs. Thanks Allen
