You can redirect email addresses to external addresses using distribution lists with contacts or transport rules, but I have been asked to redirect an email address to an external ip address. Is this available in Exchange 2007 or DNS? Thanks

emails at IP addresses are usually expressed in the format user@[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] . Some GUI input fields will accept this, but others won't. Where are you trying to type the address? Thanks for the reply. I'm being asked to route an address to another server outside the organization. The message gets processed by the other server. But I'm not familiar with routing an email address given only a server ip address. Thanks

That's a very strange request, would this email address be part of your Exchange org or someone elses? Routing is based on DNS, you really can't manipulate it to go somewhere else unless you tinker with DNS. You can do route an entire domain to a smarthost using connectors but not single emails. Thanks for your reply. I agree it's an odd request and if I knew more than the basics of mx records in dns, I might have dismissed it outright. I also want to be sure on the Exchange side. I know we can use: client-side rules transport rules redirect to a contact from a distribution list All these require an email address or contact to be the recipient. Thanks for your feedback.

Hi, Do you mean that you want to send the mails to the destination through a smart host (another mail server)? You can configure a send connector to route the mails to another mail server/IP address. 1. Open EMC, expand to Organization Configuration->Hub transport->Send connectors. Right click and click New Send connector. 2. In Address space section, click add, then type in the domain name of the mail destination which you want to redirect to another server, such as hotmail.com. 3. In Network settings section, select “Route mail through the following smart hosts”, then add the IP address of the mail server. Make sure that your exchange server is permitted to relay off this mail server. Then all mails which are sent to hotmail.com will be redirected to this mail server, then send to hotmail.com.
