The structure of an Exchange 2007 database is not backwards compatible with an Exchange 2003 database. There were datbase design changes in 2007 for performance optimization.

Database portability only works when the servers expect the same
database structure and schema. The Exchange 2007 database, for
examlple, doesn't use a pair of files (an EDB and STM file) to handle
messages. The database page size is different between Exchange 2003
and 2007. There are additions to the schema that don't exist in
Exchange 2003.

If you want to be able to move the data from an Exchange 2007 back to Exchange 2003, you can export to PST and then import the PST's to the 2003 server or use a third party product like Lucid8's DigiScope
http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp to move data direct from the offline 2007 EDB into any other production Exchange server.Troy Werelius
