Registry keys Outlook 2010 default program

I am trying to make Outlook 2010 to be my default mail client.
However, I can't do it in Outlook 2010 in the options field and also I can't go to control panel to change default programs.

The reason for this is because we are using a shell for the users which name I won't mention as I don't think that is allowed.

Basicly what I need is:
- the registry key that sets outlook to be the default mail client

All the other solutions like deleting a key and restarting outlook will not work ( due to the shell ) and also renaming dll files as sugested by searching the www also doesn't work.

The only solution for me will be to know the Registry key that makes outlook 2010 the default c

Hi,

Please remove the corrupted Outlook registry key and then perform a Detect and Repair operation to have Outlook to rebuild the key.

Note: If you want to modify Registry, please back up it first.

The detailed steps, please refer to following article(Please strictly carry out those steps):

Hi Karen,

As I stated in my Original post this won't work for me.
I am working in a shell and deleting the regkey won't work.

I need to know the exact regkey setting that makes outlook the default windows program for email.

Thanks anyway for replying though.

Regards,

Andr

Hi,

Check for the existence of the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Clients

If present, export then delete this key.

You can just modify the settings on this key to reflect the client you would like to be the default, but it is easier to delete it for it is not needed for mailto functions to work.

Make sure the following registry keys reflect the mail client you would like set as default:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\mailto

In each setting you want (Default) to have a value of Microsoft Outlook.

Best regards,

Hi Karen,

This look much better and more in the way I am searching, thanks for helping me out :D

I will provide my information:

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients
Default =
NO VALUE

- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto
Default =
URL:MailTo-protocol

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\mailto
Default =
URL:MailTo-protocol

I don't have the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Clients
This is currently on my local machine on which Outlook is the default program.

What I am trying to achieve is to find the key in the registry and modify it and look if outlook is still my default program. If not then I know that is they key I am searching. As soon as I have that key, I will configure it on the clients machine with Microsoft Outlook.

For additional information, hereby the real scenario:
User starts up a program ( taxes ) and uses the button within the program to send it via e-mail.
A popup apears informing the user that there is no default mail program.

However, if an administrator logs on to the computer and clicks on a mailto: link , for example, a website it does launch up outlook 2010. So I think this is a user setting as the administrator already has this set.

So just to be clear in 1 phrase: How can I make sure that when the user clicks on send an email to your taks manager outlook will open as a default program and only via registry setting(s).
