Reinstalling CAS-Role on my current Exchange Server 2007
Hi All,I have a single box of Windows Server 2003 Std which act as my DC (4 FSMO role holder) and also Exchange Server 2007 (HT-CAS-MBx Server)My current Exchange Server 2007 SP1 RU3 got problem in the autodiscovery error, however I'd like to perform a CAS role reinstall, here it is the things that I'd like to do:0. Backup the whole server using Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5 (Full backup).1. Go to Add/Remove Programs aand then do the Exchange Server 2007 - CAS Role only uninstall, then restart2. Perform CAS role re-installation then restart again.3. apply the .NET Fx 3.5 SP1 Updatemy question questions are:1. do i need to reapply the Rollup update 3 again or shall i just wait until RU 8 released ?2. since this server also perform as my DC + FSMO role holder would it be fine if i use disk snapshot tool to do full backup and restore of my Server ?for the fallback plan i shall just restore the backup image taken from step 0 above. Please let me know if this is a good move or not. Thanks/* Support Engineer */

1. Do I need to reapply the Rollup update 3 again or shall I just wait until RU 8 released?
Per my knowledge, we dont need to re-apply Rollup after re-installed server role
2. Since this server also perform as my DC + FSMO role holder would it is fine if I use disk snapshot tool to do full backup and restore of my Server?
Of course, 3rd-party backup application will work, but I would recommend you to use Microsofts Ntbackup to do the ASR (Automated System Recovery) to backup for the system, and the exchange data

thanks James for your reply, here it is my master plan:Server A - 1st DNS + DC Global Catalog (Schema Master role)Server B - Exc.Srv07 + DC Global Catalog (PDC,RID,Infra. Master, Domain Naming master)at the moment, the Server B is already acting as the Secondary DNS Server in my domain, and I'm wondering if i could fit all of the FSMO role into single box for simplifying the backup.Initially, my plan is just reinstall CAS Server role, but then I found out that my FSMO role is spread across 2 servers, now I also planning to reinstall Server A as well since it's been running slow installed with too many softwareIn this case I shall then do these steps:0. Backup Server A and B as Full (store it somewhere safe)1. transfer Schema Master role to Server B2. restart and check the email flow3. Uninstall CAS-Role then restart.4. Install CAS-ROLE and restart.5. take final full backup again for both Server A and BCheers,Albert/* Support Engineer */

I would move your Schema Master to Server B, rebuild Server A, move roles to Server A, rebuild Server B. Deploy AD move FSMO roles, deploy Exchange with the /recoverserver switch. You may also want to take a look at this article: Exchange 2007 services cannot start automatically after you install Exchange 2007 on a global catalog serverBP

Yes, agree with Bardapony. However, to move all the roles to server B may exist performance problem, since all things will run on a single server
So, my suggestion would be: Introduce a backup server and promote as the Temp DC, and then move all roles from server A and B to it, which can increase the speed for whole backup & recovery procedure and safety for entire environment. After move all roles to Temp DC, the reinstallation procedure would be easier

Thanks for the reply James and Bardapony, the reason that I'd like to consolidate all FSMO role into one single server are:1. my domain is quite small only 1 domain in one single forest with max. 55 users.2. when i shutdown/restart the Server A (DC + 1st DNS + Terminal Server) Exchange Server would still be able to operate send and receive email.3. simplify backup and restore.well, that's all i know for the benefits. Please correct me if I'm wrong.Cheers,Albert./* Support Engineer */

What is the Autodiscover error? You could simply recreate the autodiscover Virtual Directory rather then reinstalling the entire CAS role. Also, you should keep two DC/GCs in your environment for Exchange 2007. You will need the redundency in case one goes down.Check this link:

It's a loooooong story mate :-|http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrclients/thread/9fa13006-6c95-4d6c-8033-5289e9308ef3http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrclients/thread/c88e53d3-e877-41b8-b290-66356b507235andhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrclients/thread/d47dedbf-688b-4a2f-9e25-f4502478d903so based on your suggestion what I'd like to do is that try to:0. backup Server B using Disk snapshot (Symantec BESRO 8.5) cold backup.1. recreating the Autodiscover web vd2. installing .NET Fx 3.5 SP1 updateand if it's still failed, I'm afraid that it would make the problem much worse if I restore the backup from step 0.:-( .
