Hi, We have just migrated from an internal Exchange 2003 (SBS) solution to a Hosted Exchange (2010) solution. Users have no issue to send and receive emails through the new Hosted Exchange solution that doesn't interfer with the internal Exchange server that is still running. Internal fax servers are configured to forward faxes to internal user mailboxes (individual users or user groups). These servers cannot be configured to send emails to the Hosted Exchange server. We would like to configure the internal Exchange server (SBS 2003) to relay the company emails to the external world, the internet, rather than distributing them internally to user mailboxes. In other words, we would like the internal Exchange server to act as a SMTP gateway that would pass the emails sent to the company domain to the Internet. MX records for the company domain are pointing to the hosted Exchange server. A smart host is configured but it doesn't process the emails sent to the internal domain. How can this be done ? Why can't the internal devices be configured to use the external hosted Exchange platform? It is no different to using the existing Exchange server. You simply change the SMTP address to the MX record host name that has been provided by the hosted Exchange provider. Another option would be to create a CNAME in your internal DNS that points an internal address to the external MX record host - so relay.example.local actually points to mx1.hosted.example.com. If Exchange finds that the email address matches a user on its server it will never send it out, and you cannot change that behaviour. If you have migrated away from the SBS server then you should remove the Exchange functionality from it completely. If you insist on email being routed via an internal server, then you would need to setup one that wasn't Exchange integrated, and configure it to relay email to the external host. Simon.
