Remove Exchange from Active Directory: Exchange box is toast
I am trying to remove Exchange from AD.  I am not sure how to do this because our exchange box is toast.  We have an online in cloud solution hosting our mail now.  I was asked to uninstall exchange and such.  I was able to uninstall the backup exchange but our main box has been destroyed during a move.  Now all i want to do is make sure AD is not looking for exchange or anything like that. Again i am not sure how to go about this.  We cannot recover the exchange box.  I have been asked to just make sure exchange is gone from our DC's

The supported method is to reinstall it on a server with the same name using the /RecoverServer switch and then uninstall it cleanly.  The unsupported method is to go into ADSI Edit, Configuration namespace, and remove it under Services.  I don't guarantee you that you'll not have problems using the unsupported method.

To use the ADSI Edit, would i go onto the DC to use that?  I am not sure were in AD to use that?  I have AD on my machine also.

I was able to get the server to come up but i am getting all kinds of weird errors trying to uninstall it.  Basically it will not uninstall.  My manager just wants me to remove it from AD so it no longer is there etc...

Again i am not sure where or how to use the ADSI Edit.

What kind of problems could occur?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

yet another reply from me.  We no longer use exchange and we don't need anything associated with it in AD.  How can i just delete it out of AD?  Will this do anything crazy??

The easy way to do that is to go into ADSI Edit, Configuration naming context, and under Services delete Microsoft Exchange, which deletes everything below it.  You will, however, still have all the schema extensions and properties on recipient (user, groups, contacts) objects.

This is not supported and I will not promise you that it won't come back and bite you in the ass later.
