Removing Exchange Server from network
Hello,Quite some time ago, we had an exchange server, which was a domain controller. The hard drive failed and we were unable to remove it from the network. We are about to setup a new domain controller and a seperate new exchange server.I want to tidy up exchange and active directory before deployment. How can I remove all references to the old failed exchange server?I have several documents and a plan to remove it from active directory. However I expect it is best to tidy up exchange first.Scott

Hi Scott,I pre assume you have Exchange Server 2003 and multiple domain controllers and trying to remove the exchange server references from the active directory. As you stated earlier it appears that you dont have the exchange server running anymore. I can think of a couple of ways to do it.1. Run/Disaterrecovery setup on the box of your choice. Take a look athttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124429.aspxand http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/8333962.i.You can use ADSIEDIT and remove the exchange SERVER (only) from the configuration partition and then remove mailboxes from all mailbox enabled users using ADUC.ii. After above step simply reinstall exchange on the box of your choice.3.Remove the entire Exchange Org., Run forestprep and domainprep again and install a fresh exchange. I hope you already have your Exchange Database copies available. I would strongly recommend going with the first option though.M-Milind Naphade

The server is not operationalFacility: win32 ID no: 8007203a Exchange System ManagerAny sugggestions?

Hi,Any other Exchange Server in the network? Do you have backup of the Exchange Server Data? Are you going to install a fresh Exchange Server without importing any mailbox from the orginial one?If you do have another Exchange Server computer in the network, then please try to follow kb 822931 to move all the relevant to the other Exchange Server. If you do not have another Exchange Server in the network, this oneis the first Exchange Server. Then I think you may have to use ADSIedit to remove all the Exchange related container.Detail steps you can refer to my post in similar thread: Principal Exchange server can't boot uphttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvravailabilityandisasterrecovery/thread/c972d16a-a5f7-4afd-8390-46b416b6bfff/For error, themessage indicates that port 379, the port that is used for SRS LDAP requests, is not responding on the server that the SRS is trying to synchronize with. If the secondary server is trying to synchronize with another SRS service, make sure that the other SRS service has been started.Regards,Xiu

Hello Scott,The Error8007203a translates intoERROR_DS_SERVER_DOWN. After having this information in hands I will concentrate on the Active Directory as well. I would suggest you removing the server instances from Active Directory if it was the only server in your network (as stated by Xiu) and start with the fresh setup. Before you do that I will also suggest checking the active directory replication with replmon.exe and other functinoalities with dcdiag.exeI think that should be it. Another point to be noted is, if you do not have any exchange 5.5 servers in the entire exchange organization you wont need SRS started anywhere unless you have some custom application using it.Let us know how it goes.M-Milind Naphade

Xiu and M, Just to clarify. Exchange Server No.1 is dead. It was a dc and exchange server. Exchange Server No.2 is working fine. It is a dc and exchange server 2003. I have performed most of the steps in 822931. However I cannot peform the steps: - "Create another Site Replication Service (SRS) instance - Rehome connectors to another server I don't want any of the information on Exchange Server No. 1. I simply want to remove it from the network without causing Exchange on Server No 2. to fail. Once this is all done. I plan to setup a new dc and introduce another exchange server 2007. Thanks, Scott

Hi,First I'd like to know where did you find these reference, please give the detail steps or screenshot.Besides,I found these connector seems for Exchange 2000, Exchange 5.5 or Exchange 4.0, if you have any routing group for Lotus, Quarterdeck Mail for the Macintosh?Regards,Xiu

Yes i think these connectors are legacy ie from exchange 2000 or earlier.I don't need them. How can i delete them.Scott

Hi,Please try to find these connector via Exchange System Manager and then find the connector and then right click to delete them.Note: Exchange System Manager-Administrative Groups-AG-Servers-Routing Groups-ConnectorsIf you cannot delete these connector there, then please try to find these connector via ADSIedit.msc and then delete them.1. Please install Windows Support Tools.2. Type adsiedit.msc from a command prompt.3. Expand each of the following items: Configuration ContainerCN=Configuration, DC=DomainName,DC=comCN=Services CN=Microsoft Exchange CN= OrganizationNameCN=Administrative GroupsCN= AdministrativeGroupNameOrExchange5.5SiteNameCN=Routing GroupsCN=First Routing GroupsCN=Connections4. Remove any Exchange 5.5 Server connectors that appear in the right pane. For example, remove the Internet Mail Service Connector, Microsoft Mail Connector, Lotus cc:Mail connector. To do so, right-click the connector, and then click Delete. Regards,Xiu
