Removing an old Exchange 2007 Server from AD
Hello I had an old Exchange 2007 server in the domain at one stage which is now offline. I am trying to install Exchange 2010 on a new server but this is refusing to run the set-up as it says there is still an Exch 2007 box in the domain. I have gone though most of the articales about this and trawled adsiedit which looks different to most of the posts (no CN=Services) and still had no look. This is a 2008R2 server trying to installed Exchange 2010. Anyone have any idea what is left in my AD that references the old Exchange server? Thanks

The only supported method to remove Exchange 2007 from the domain is via add/remove programs. That would mean building a server with the same name as the one that is offline, then reinstalling Exchange using the recover server switch. Once complete, it can then be removed using add/remove programs. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources

So does that mean there is no alternative for manual removal? I've seen a few posts about manual removal but I can only think I've missed something in going through AD.

Everything that you have seen elsewhere will be not supported by Microsoft. You will not find anything about manual removal of Exchange 2007 from Microsoft, on Technet, KB etc. Manual removal by Microsoft support would be supported, so you may well have to call them.
