Removing child domain question with Exchange
HiI am looking for some advice about the best way to tackle this problem. At the moment I have a Active Directory forest with one parent and one child domain. There is only one Domain Controller in this child domain. This domain controller also has Exchange Server 2007 installed as it currently receives a email from a different smtp domain than the exchange server in our parent domain which runs Exchange Server 2003. Both exchange servers are currently able to send email to each other no problem. The plan is to now have this site with the child domain and Exchange Server now part of our head office setup. I want to remove the child domain and simply have it like some of our other remote sites i.e. another AD site but part of the parent domain. In regards Exchange we simply want this to become an addtional Exchange server within our existing Exchange 2003 organisation so that we can move mailboxes between the two servers depending where the users are located.I plan to use the ADMT to migrate the users to the parent domain but I am bit unsure of how I will deal with the Exchange 2007 side. One of the reasons for this is I dont think it is possible to move Exchange 2007 between domains? The best way I can think to do this is:1. Backup all the users in the child domains files and email mailboxes2. Use ADMT to migrate user accounts to parent domain3. Run dcpromo on the child domain controller to demote the server and remove the child domain4. Un-install and remove Exchange Server 2007 from organisation5. Reinstall Server OS and promote to be domain controller for new site6. Reinstall Exchange Server 2007 on the server and into the existing organisation7. Create mailboxes on Exchange 2007 Server for users that were migrated to parent domain8. Restore files and emails into new mailboxesCan anyone think of a better way of doing this? In particular I am hoping that I wont have to remove and re-install Exchange, its no problem to re-create the user accounts and re-attach to mailbox as there are only about 40-50 users. Thanks

After step 2, why cant you move mailboxes to an existing server in the parent domain, and then move them back to the Exchange 2007 server, once it is installed in the parent domain? you can move mailboxes back to E2k3 as well temporarily.also how exactly do you plan to restore backup of mailboxes to the server, once it is moved to the parent domain. I dont think backup taken from the child domain server will work while restoring to the parent domain server.

HiI cant migrate them to the Exchange Server in the parent domain as there is not enough space on the server.I plan to export the users mailbox to pst file and then import them back in to their new mailbox - long winded I know but easier and safer I think?

The steps looks Good to me. only things is It is not good practice to install Exchange on DC/GC http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997407.aspx You can also make note of important points before you migrate the Mailboxes. Below Link can help you Exchange 2007 Cross Org Mailbox Migration Once everything is done you will have to point the MX record for the domain it was responsible and point it to new serverVinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|

yeah if you are planning to go the pst way, these steps look fine. As vinod says, its not recommended to install Exchange on a DC/GC, that said- things will still work.Let us know how it went.
