Replacing a DC with an Exchange server in the mist.
In my network environment I have two domain controllers (2003 SP2)with Global Cataloging on each. Then there is my Exchange server (2003 SP2), I have replaced one of my domain controllers as follows: I first verified that the FSMO roles were assigned to the other domain controller. I then dcpromoted the new server to become a domain controller. I made sure it was a Global Catalog, DNS server and DHCP server. I then made sure the Exchange was seeing the servers and all were talking just fine. Then I demoted the old server, removing the roles, and doing a dcpromo. All seem to go fine with replacing one of the domain controller. However, I'm now ready to replace my other domain controller. So here is my question, When I originally installed Exchange I ran forest prep and domain prep as required. One of the original domain controllers has already been replaced. Now I'm looking at replacing my second domain controller but I'm concern that the forest prep and domainn prep were done with the old servers. Once I remove the last server that was an active server where domain prep and forest prep were done under is there any risk or failure to the exchange server? In a nutshell, if Ireplace the last original server where domain prep, and forest prep are there any special steps that need to take? Do I need to run forest prep again or domain prep again..I have not be able to find any documentation on this but my gut feeling says no, that when you do a dcpromo within a current domain to bring up another domain controller it copies all the configurations including anything done by domain prep and forest prep. Can anyone verify this.ThanksPhill

No special steps are necessary, since this 2nd GC/DC is actually holding the FSMO Roles including the Schema Master they will be assigned to the new DC once you run DCPROMO it. You can also move the FMSO Roles manually if you prefer,http://www.petri.co.il/transferring_fsmo_roles.htmMVP Exchange Server

So I do not need to run forest or domain prep again. Just follow the standard steps in removing/adding a domain controller.
