I am attempting a hardware move of Exchange 2003. Windows 2003 to Windows 2003 and Exch 2003 to Exch 2003. The new server is installed - no errors - and updated accordingly. Exchange 2003 is installed - no errors - and is updated accordingly. I'm able to move a test mailbox to the new server without issue. I'm able to connect to both servers without issue through System Manager. I am not able to get replication to work from old to new. I can see the logged event for sending information from the old server to the new server, but no corresponding receive message is logged. This has me absolutely baffled. I've also enlisted the help of a 3rd party contractor who was not able to figure this out. Any help is greatly appreciated. Dave

Hi Dave I assume you are trying to get public folder replication working. Can you send an email from a mailbox on the one server to the other? Are messages appearing in the queue? Steve

Thank you for the response. You are correct, I'm trying to get public folder to replicate. I had to Move the test account again. I can send from Administrator to Testuser. This account is set to forward to another address AND to the mailbox. The forwarding seems to work, but there's no message delivered to the mailbox. I also did not see it go through the queue and there's nothing in the queue on the new machine. I hope that answers your questions. Thanks, Dave

Actually, the three test messages I sent from old to new are in the queue on the OLD. They are not sending to the new. dave

OK, so mail flow is not working between the servers which would explain why the public folder is not replicating. If you have a look at First Administrative Group -> Routing Groups -> First Routing Group -> Members, does the new server appear there? Can you telnet to the new server from the old on port 25?

Both machine show in Members. The old is Master and the new is Member. I did telnet <ip> 25 and get: 220 rvmail2011.domain.org Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790 .4675 ready at Tue, 14 Feb 2012 11:23:08 -0500 Dave

Right so SMTP is responding which is good. Have a look at the Message Tracking Center (in Tools) and see if you can track the test message you sent earlier, you should see an error which will help us here.

There is no error stated, but the message appears to be directed OUT of the organization. I see: 11:02 SMTP: Mesage Routed and Queued for Remote Delivery 11:02 SMTP: Started outbound Transfer of message 11:02 Message transferred to am1ehsmhs014.bigfish.com through SMTP Then there's two more of these messages to different bigfish.com subs.

Can you have a look at the properties of your SMTP virtual server (First Administrative Group -> Servers -> Old 2003 Server -> Protocols -> SMTP -> Default), on the Delivery tab, do you have a Smart host configured there? Now have a look at First Administrative Group -> First Routing Group -> Connectors. Do you have an Outbound SMTP connector there? If so do you have a Smart host configured (Genral tab)?

There IS a Smart Host in the SMTP Protocol. There is NOT one in First Routing Group.

OK, I suspect that this is the issue. You should have a outbound SMTP connector configured with the smart host on it, you should not have the smart host configured on the virtual directory.

We're using Forefront Online Protection for Exchange. I'm looking around and it appears they suggested putting mail.global.frontbridge.com in the Virtual Server. Though there are some discrepiencies between the various domains (five domains), so I've opened a support ticket with them to see if I can get better instruction for the configuration. (Note - the issue you are helping me with is for one domain only. There's no trusts between any of the domains.) As for the communications, I'm still not seeing any communications between the two servers. On the OLD machine, the Queue for the NEW machine is listed with a State of "retry". I try to Force and it goes to Active then back to a state of Retry. Please let me know if I've confused you in any way. Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave You really can't have a smart host configured on a virtual server if you have more than one Exchange 2003 server in your organisation. Have a read here for more information on this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996082%28EXCHG.65%29.aspx You should see errors for the queue which might help with trying to work out why they are still not getting through. I made the change and the Queue emptied. I can now get emails from one account on the old server. I will check in the morning to see if there's any replication. THANK YOU! Dave

That appears to have been the issue. Now I can let the contusions on my forehead heal! The Public Folders are replicating. I will check tomorrow for consistency. Dave

Remove the smart host from the SMTP VS and create a SMTP Connector with an address space of "*" and put the smart host in the SMTP Connector. Now your outbound mail will go to FOPE and your internal mail will move using SMTP directly between the servers within the same routing group.
