Restoring old backups of Exchange servers that no longer exist
Dear all, The customer I'm working for wants to decommission an Exchange 2003 server, and replace it with a new server that will also be installed with Exchange 2003. They are obligated to be able to restore (old) Exchange backups that are two years old. Is it possible to restore Exchange databases on the new server, in the recovery storage group, for a server and a mail store that does no longer exist? I thought that some backup programs require you to select the Exchange server and Storage Group before you can perform an actual restore, and those two have to actually exist in the environment. If that's the case, the old Exchange server cannot be decommissioned. Thanks for your help!

Hi Vinod, Thanks for your answer! No changes (apart from removing the old server) are going to be done, so we'll be safe to remove the server. Cheers
