Retention Policy vs Managed Custom Folder
Hello, what is the difference when one of these 2 is applied to a particular folder ? I know that with Retention Policy a user can be assigned a particular policy which will have associated tags, then the user can tag his folders with the appropriate tags according to the company policy. I have my doubts regarding this as control is left to the user and if he forgets or makes an incorrect tag, data can be lost, what is your opinion ? As regard to managed folder I know that I can do it in Powershell in Exchange 2010 and that a folder can be given a particular instruction as what to do with e-mail within it. Thanks

Under retention Policy - user has some controls and put desierd tags. Moreover through retention policy you can archive messages to Online archive folder. if forgets then default Tag should apply and if user apply incorrect tag then you can not help it. managed folder is same what we used with exhcange 2003 MRM. If for example I want that all e-mails that are in the Inbox are automatically deleted after about 125 days what difference will there be if I choose Retention Policy or Managed Folder ?

No difference if all you want to do is apply an Inbox policy. However, note that Managed Folders management UI has been removed from EMC in Exchange 2010 SP1, so it'll be easier to manage Retention Policies and Retention Tags going forward. Additionally, should you wish to add retention settings and allow users more flexibility (by deploying personal tags), using Retention Policies would be a more practical long-term solution.
