Retention tags and policies referring to Inbox
I don't think what we're wanting to do seems out of the ordinary, but I'm having trouble finding information on how to do this. We want to set up a default tag to delete items after 45 days with recovery. We also want to move items from the Inbox to the Archive after 30 days. The EMC won't allow me to create a Move to Archive for the Inbox. I've found statements on the Internet saying that I could create the tag as a Delete, save, then open and modify it to Move to Archive. This seems to work in as far as when I open up the properties for that tag it says that it will move to the archive. In practice, it doesn't seem to work. Does anyone have any thoughts on how I can accomplish this? I do not want to set it up as a personal tag as I do not want the user to have to set the tag themselves.

Because this RPT applies to both the primary mailbox and the archive one, they are causing the ManagedFolderAssistant to make copies of emails from the online archive, to the online archive that already exist and thus causing the database bloat. Thank you. I've read those articles. I'm still trying to figure out how to move items from the Inbox to Archive and have a deletion process at the same time. It seems to me that this would be a common configuration, yet I can't seem to find a way to accomplish it without the user having to manually set the Archive option through Outlook.

Thank you, Frank. I can now understand why it's not supported. Do you have any thoughts on how I can have both Inbox to Archive and a deletion process? As stated in my response to Girish, it would seem to me to be a common configuration, yet the method to accomplish this escapes me.

Hi Maglinger, If you only want to move(cut) items from inbox folder to archive one by retention tag, I'm afraid you have to rely on Personal tag at the moment.Frank Wang TechNet Community Support

No. It's disappointing that we can have an Inbox policy that will move to archive, or delete, but not delete from archive. It seems that Exchange 2010 is just moving mail from one pile to another without a way to automatically purge. File storage systems have been doing this for some time now. Exchange could learn a few things.
