Reverse DNS records
Trying to re-do an Exchange 2003 system and get it ready for 2010. This company has a bit of a mess with DNS records and I want to make sure I get the Reverse DNS records setup correctly because they are currently missing! They use two Ironport devices that are in a cluster. It seems that when sending email out, it can be sent from either one because I see the two IP addresses in different emails. I guess that is how an Ironport cluster works? Anyway, in ESM, I set the FQDN and Masquerade domain name to be mail.company.net and company.net respectively. The Ironport devices are also listed in the external DNS zone, so when I look at the mail header, it reads Received: from unknown (HELO mail.company.net) ([10.250.xxx.xxx) by ironport.company.net with ESMTP; 29 Apr 2011 time / date I can also see ironport2.company.net in other emails sent out. How should the reverse DNS records be set? Should it point to the name ironport.company.net and ironport2.company.net or should it only point to mail.company.net?

There should be reverse record for each server that can send out email. If ironport and ironport2 can send out email, create a PTR for each. Masquerade Domain isnt in play here and each sending server should have a unique name.

Thanks for the reply. Should I then just remove the masquerade domain name? This is one Exchange 2003 cluster.
