Hey Guys, I have a SBS 2008 Server that I have imaged to new hardware using Acronis (Dell T310 to Dell T410, very similar but new server has dual processors and sas scsi). The backup, and restore works perfectly. The initial start up after the restore the server doesnt detect the network cards and other small items but installs them after login. I assing it a Static IP (same as the previous server) and then reboot it. When the server comes up the network connection has a red X through it and the network/sharing center hangs. After about 5 minutes the system eventually completes loading and the network connection comes up and network/sharing center is accessible. The problem is that my SMTP service for exchange will NOT work. If i try to telnet to port 25 on the server IP it times out. POP3 (110) works fine. Ive deleted the exchange receive connecter and recreated it but no luck. Doesnt make any sense. I ran the connect to internet wizard just to see if it would help but still nothing. Any ideas?

If i run the Fix My Network Wizard it says a potential problem is that my network adapter does not have a static IP (which it does, 192.168.1.3). So I humor it and allow it to fix it but it errors out, saying it could not change the address (even though it does, to 192.168.0.2). These wizards are really a pain.

The fact is, the product is designed to be configured with the wizards. Even I use the wizards to configure SBS, learnt that lesson a long time ago. Did you assign the IP address with the wizard or manually through Network Connections? With SBS I find that as soon as you try to something that there is a wizard for, things start to break. Initially after the first boot up I did not run the wizards. I did just now, just for the purpose of doing it. First the connect to internet wizard which completed fine. Second the fix my network which is now picking up bad SMTP connectors. I ask it to fix it, it says it cant. Go figure. I deleted all the receive connectors entirely and created a new one; no difference. I then changed the port binding to 26 but still no luck. I noticed during all this that the transport service would stop after changing the port number; I also noticed forefront server was not running and would not run (would start, the immediately stop). The logs provided no information/errors other than start/stop status. Soo..I removed forefront server and rebooted the computer and still the same thing; no action on port 25 and when i switch to port 26 it stops the transport service. Also i ran the fix my network wizard again and its telling me now I dont have a static IP (Wtf?). I checked the adapter settings and the IP is static and it set correctly but the gateway field is now empty. Total insanity. This was previously set when i ran the connect to internet wizard (you can specify a "router" ip). This just doesnt make any sense. All these wizards are just creating problems.

The "Sender Reputation Database" was corrupt and was causing the Microsoft Exchange Transport Service to shut down. I deleted the database files and restarted the service and viola, 220 MICROSOFT ESMTP MAIL SERVICE READY. Time to drink heavily :)
