SMTP Protocol Error
Recently outbound email to AOL has been being blocked and not delivered with the bounce message: ipconfirm@postmaster.aol.com on 8/26/2009 12:46 PM Could not deliver the message in the time limit specified. Please retry or contact your administrator. <mail.domain.com #4.4.7> Set the timeouts for longer periods of time etc... In the mail queue the SMTP connector shows the message queued and states "An SMTP error occurred". When sending email via telnet the headers are all blocked but we're able to connect. Checked firewalls etc... port 25 is open, email only being bounced from AOL everything else is going through. MX ip address has a good rep and is not on any blacklists etc... Telnet to the MX server from behind the firewall it's fine to send email via telnet, outside firewall and telnet fails i.e. 550 errors and no banner. Any ideas?

Just to aol.com?that error "typically" means your sending mail server doesnt have a PTR/Reverse record in DNS. If its just aol, then I would contact them.http://postmaster.aol.com/

Hi,As Andy has already asked you about the problem being with every domain or just AOL I would also suggest you to check out this one http://thebackroomtech.com/2008/03/28/troubleshooting-exchange-error-447-delivery-delay-and-failures/AOL will always cross check your existance on the internet and a missing PTR record for your domain name will result into problems like you are facing now. Let us know how it goes.Milind Naphade | MCTS:M | http://www.msexchangegeek.com

Still having problems with AOL? I ask because I have heard of other places having the same issue as you and now it appears to be resolved.

Hi,From the symptom, it seems that the email was blocked by the Reverse DNS on the AOL. As Andy said, did you add the PTR record in the DNS?ThanksAllen
