Schema problem
Hi we have a stable 2003 AD and Exchange 2003 system, however the Exchange schema extensions (well, the Exchange-related details in a user's details) are only visible on the Exchange box so adding new users has to be performed on that machine rather than the DC, with a quick trip to the DC as well to ensure that a user folder is set up to hold the roaming profile. Not exactly a pain, so we've lived with it. I'm concerned thoughthat it might come back to haunt us if we decide to move to Exchange 2007 (or later ...). I have a feeling that one or both of the ForestPrep / DomainPrep were run from the (then) new Exchange box, rather than the DC. As it's a live system, I'm hesitant to re-run either of these from the DC for fear of it overwriting the schema with empty values. Is there any way I can encorage our DC to show the extra details? Thanks in advance.

This is not a schema problem. You need to install the Exchange Admin in the computers from which you want to add users. Actually, in our domain we don't have the Exchange Admin installed in the Domain controller since I rarely login to the servers. I do all the administration from my workstation with a separate account (look at the best practices) Anyhow, you need to install the same level of admin tools as in the Exchange server. Use the Exchange CD, install administration tools. In the installation make sure to select Custom (so you don't install Exchange in the DC or other PC) and select only the admin tools at the bottom. The same with the service packs. In real life practice this is what I do: log to my PC with a regular account (this is a domain user account, not admin) and I do most of my daily tasks in this account. For Domain/Exchange administration I have a Special account (sa-david@mydomain.com for example) With this account i launch CPAU and a cmd promtp window, from which anything I launch it launches with those credentials (it saves me the trouble of using run as all the time, but Run As will sufice as well) In my PC I have installed the Windows 2003 admin tools, and the Exchange Admin (and a long array of other tools, like Symantec Backup Exec console, Symantec Antivirus console, etc) It seems to me you still don't really understand Windows 2003 management. I would strongly suggest that you spend some more time looking at management practices. To answer the question short: You need to install the Exchange Admin component. ForestPret/Domain prep do not care i fthe shell extensions do not show in the DC (it is not the schema that is wrong after all, just the shell extension for Exchange in the DC are not added) You cannot force (encourage) the DC to show those extension, they just need to be installed http://www.petri.co.il/administer_exchange_2003_from_windows_xp_2000_2003.htm Cheers
