Shared mailbox and User mailbox differences ?
Hi All,
Any explanation what's the different any how can I create shared mailbox or no need to worry about it in Exchange Server 2007 SP1 ?
I'm confused here, in my current situation, I have created single mailbox from Exc Mgmt. console and grant full access permission as well as send as permission but how come the mailbox object is still as the "User mailbox" where the old object which was
exist before I join the company is displayed as "Shared Mailbox" ?
Thanks./* Server Support Specialist */

Because the AD account is enabled and has a password. Exchange recognizes different mailbox types one being a "shared" mailbox. A shared mailbox in terms of exchange means the AD account is disabled and there is no PW associated with it.

thanks for your reply man, so if I disable the user it will be automatically recognized as the SHARED MAILBOX and the Full-access user will still be able to have access into it right ?/* Server Support Specialist */

Good question, not sure if disabling the AD account will mark it as a shared mailbox in Exchange. However the full access will still be there and the users will still be able to access it. You can try disabling the account and see if Exchange marks it as
a shared mailbox, but I doubt it. You will likely need to convert the mailbox type to shared set-mailbox name -type shared so Exchange can update the msExchRecipientTypeDetails attribute to a shared mailbox type.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

ok, so is there any performance or functionality difference apart from user mailbox type display only between these two types ?
I suppose if no big difference apart from the username is being disabled or just "cosmetic" object displayed in Exc. Mgmt. console then i can just leave it as it is :-)/* Server Support Specialist */

There is no difference as far as functionality; they can still be accessed by others who have full mailbox rights; so yes you can leave it as is.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com
