Simple Question
I want to change what is displayed when a user sends email. For example take this user AD Account: jblank display name: Joe Blank Whoever he sends email to sees this: [Joe Blank] jblank@domain.com I want to change just the name as it is displayed in the email address. Change from: [Joe Blank] jblank@domain.com Change to: : [Joesph Blank] jblank@domain.com Where in AD can I change only that? Exchange 2003 Thanks

Right click on the name in AD --> Click Rename --> Put a space at the end of the name and enter, just for the heck of it to get the "Rename User" dialog box Can now change the display name as needed.

Dont use trailing space's in any field. You will eventually get into problem and its also makes troubleshooting harder.

I guess it wasn't a simple question :-) So I have to rename the user in AD? Or just change the display name in the users properties? I'm only looking to change what is sent in the email so when someone gets the email the name displayed is the one I changed.

Change the Display Name, that is whats seen in GAL and on mail but beware that having different displayname and AD-name can cause confusion so I would change both to be consistent

Interesting.... I changed the display name and waited over an hour. Outlook clients in my domain see the change but email clients that are external (yahoo, hotmail, etc..) still see the old display name. Any ideas?

A little strange. Are you using a MAPI client to send your messages or POP/IMAP? If you are using the latter, then the display name thatrecepeientssee is the setting you have put in the client. FZ.

Outlook 2003 to exchange 2003 -- MAPI (connected to the domain not POP) In AD I see the display name option under the Genereal tab of the user then under Echange advanced I see "simple display name" which is blank. I just checked and none of my users have anything in the simple display name box. I've even sent a test message to an address on the internet I know the server has not sent mail to before and it still shows the old display name. Under the email address tab I see this listed below....do I need to change any of these? CCMAIL MS SMTP X400 Thanks

It should be enough to change the "Display Name" Exchange caches a lot of information, how long did you wait betweenchanging displayname and sent a new message?

When I rename user accounts, I need to update the "legacyExchangeDN" - otherwise, the old "CN" stays and the email address resolves to this old value. Below is how to change the value. It's from a forum (I can't remember which though) posted by Ben Hoffman. I hope this helps. Re: Modify CN in the Full Mailbox Directory Name Hi Paul,Just use ADSIEdit to modify the legacyExchangeDN attribute of the user, to specifying the new account name.So if this attributes value is:/o=ExchOrg/ou=Domain/cn=RECIPIENTS/cn=OldUserChange to/o=ExchOrg/ou=Domain/cn=RECIPIENTS/cn=NewUserThen Right click on each of your RUS Items selecting "Update Now", and right click Rebuild on your Offline Address Lists. You will then need to visit the client to re-setup the Outlook Profile.Regards-- Ben HoffmanMCP (Win2000 Pro/Server & Exchange 2003 Admin)http://www.ExchangeIS.com
