Single Email Route

Hi,

I was wonder if anyone has any advice or solution for the below:

I have a situation where we want a single email address in our dns namespace e.g. user@abc.com to be routed to a secondary mail server on our network. The @abc.com portion must be maintained.

I have read a number of article on setting up exchange and other mail server sharing the same namespace,  however I only want a specific email address to be routed, not all addresses not found sent to secondary server.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Peter,

usually the internalrelaydomain is used for your task. If the address is also available via a different namespace, you can also choose the smtpforwardingaddress (or forwardingaddress) to get this working.

1. create an smtp connector for your internal relay target
2. setup a value to smtpforwardingaddress for your mail account

this is an alternative procedure to creating a contact object for forwarding to an external address.

Hi Martin,

Thank you for the reply.   In our case it must be in the same namespace, only the one specific email address should be handed over to the other mail server for processing.

The issue with using Internal Relay Domain is that if mail server 1 cannot find the <address>@abc.com, it then forwards it onto the next server in the namespace.  The problem with this is that I only want a specific address receipent i nthe namespace going to the next mail server.

Hi Peter,

From your description, you want to forward messages sent to a specified email address. In your case, you can create a transport rule to forward messages sent to this specified email address.

Hope this can be helpful to you.

Hi,

Thank you all for the reponses however I don't think I am explaining the issue / scenario correctly or I'm not understanding the proposals.    We have an single Exchange Server that handles all emails for (abc.com), however I want a specific email address specific1@abc.com to be delivrted to a seperate mail server on our network, but maintain the "ABC.COM" namespace in the emial handling.

The seperate mail server is configured to accept email for seperate1@abc.com.

Hi Peter,

if you do not want to use the Transport rule as explained above and you also do not want to use the internal relay / external relay Option for your Domain and you also do not want to setup the smtpforwardingaddress property as well I think there is no Option to resolve that with Exchange tools.

The main issue with that is that you used the same Namespace as for your Exchange Environment. So if you just forwarded it to your destination address having a recipeint of the same namespace, that mail will bounce back to the authorative mail Server, which is your Exchange Server.

So your issue is by design and you need to choose an option from the above.

Martin

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.    I guess we need to bite the bullet and use a seperate namespace :(
