If you import 50GB of PST into Exchange, the database will grow to aprox. 50GB For new mail Exchange will utilizesingle instance storage. that means if mail is sent to 5 people, Exchange will only save one copy of this mail per database. If doing this with PST files there would be 5 copies of the same mail.

No. Exchange 2003 Standard Edition supports a max of 75GB. This is not by default. Exchange 2003 SP2 supports 18GB by default, and you have to edit the registry to increase it to 75. If you want more than that you can: add another Exchange 2003 Standard Edition Server for another 75GB upgrade to Exchange 2003 Enterprise (no-limit) upgrade to Exchange 2007 Standard or Enterprise (no limit) (not really an upgrade, requires another machine) Additionally, you may want to have your users evaluate and archive their data. 5GB mailboxes tend to perform poorly on the workstation, no matter what you are doing on the server end.
