Some members of a distribution group intermitently do not receive emails
Morning all,
We have a strange situation where some users of a distribution group do not receive email. however, it changes from one user to another.
For example, user A receives mail but user B doesnt. The next time an email is sent they both receive it. Next time, it may be that user A receives and user B doesnt.
Does anyone have any ideas on this one?
Thanks

Check message tracking and see where the message went, it could be that it was delivered but gone to the Junk folder or was automatically deleted.
Is it a DDG or a simpe DG?
tried using a different expansion server if it's a DDG?Sukh

Hi mpiubb,
Any update for your issue, did you check the tracking log, and could you please post them here, and we could help you narrow down the issue.

Hi Gavin,
When the messages gets stuck it is at SMTP: Message submitted to categorizer, and then it goes no further.
all DG's are global and it is a single domain environment.
Thanks

Regardless of the number of domains in the forest, change the scope to
"Universal". Does the problem go away?

Hi,

Hi Mpjubb,
Which version exchange do you use, other information for you:
1. do you use other third party software and configure some filter rule during the email delivered, or disable the software to make some tests
2. check the IMF configuration, such as the vaule of the SCL, sometimes no proper value would cause the issue
3. Turn those problematic Global Dls to Universal DLs and test

Hi Gavin,
IMF is not installed.
I believe the only applications that interact with Exchange are Exclaimer and Surf Control. However, this is an internal only DG, so i dont think surf control would touch it.
Its Exchange 2003.
All DG's are global and they all work except for this new one. I've made it a universal and its made no difference.
Thanks
Martin

How many users in the DG?
If you create a new DG with the same users, do you get this issue?Sukh
June 11th, 2012 5:51am
There are 15 users. yes, if i create another DG, we get the same problem.

Have you tried disabling/removng Surf Control?
Does Surf Control scan all messages?Sukh
June 11th, 2012 5:57am
I havent because the problem is that Surf Control only looks at external messaging and this is the only DG that is having a problem.Martin

Does this DL have an expansion server specified?
If the message gets only as far as the categorizer it's *usually* a
problem associated with an anti-spam or anti-virus software, or the DL
has no members in it so the expansion results in no mail being
delivered.

hi,
there is no AV on the server and the DL is does not send to anyone outside of the organisation.
I've set the categorizer logging to maximum to see if that uncovers anything.Martin

In order of events, here is what is happening:
Event 1: Categorizer is refreshing its LDAP server configuration.
Event 2: Categorizer is using LDAP server Host: "FW5.fw.local", Port: 3268, Base priority: 0, Bind type: 3, Naming Context: "", Account: ""
Event 3: Categorizer is using LDAP server Host: "FW3.fw.local", Port: 3268, Base priority: 0, Bind type: 3, Naming Context: "", Account: ""
There are no errors at all.
thanksMartin

How does Surf Control look at external messages only?
I assume this is on the Exch server right?Sukh
June 12th, 2012 11:36am
correct meif im wrong, but as the message is only being routed internally isnt it going to the information store and then being routed to mailboxes? it wont touch the smtp stack. or will it?Martin

It will touch the SMTP stack.
Most filtering/spam type product works at the SMTP level and you specify (on some) which messages it should scan (internal/external). Unless this is specified I think it may be doing all.
There are multipl server in the RG?

That's nice, but you didn't answer the question:
"Does this DL have an expansion server specified?"

If he's using the "SMTP-only" stuff (i.e. E-mail security) then it
isn't looking at it at all for outbound e-mail,

Yes, it will. The routing is handled by SMTP. The message won't use
the SMTP transport, though.

Morning:
The DL does not have an expansion server specified. it is set for any server in the organization. There is one exchange serverThere is one server in the RG with 2 connectors - CJSM and Internet Mail Service
The message is now leaving the categorizer but isnt sending to all users and it changes each time we send a test. there are 15 users and each time one of them is dropped. It is only ever 1 that is dropped and it can change each time.
However, it is one of 4 users that is dropped each time.Martin

Are you 100% sure that the message isn't being delivered?
What does message tracking say now?Sukh

It isnt being delivered.
message tracking shows that she is in the list of recipients but she isnt in the list of users that have received the message.
we've found another article about a guy that had a similar problem with a DG that had 15 users in it. An exchange rebuild was on the cards so that fixed his problem. im going to try adding additional users to see what happens.Martin

Morning all,
Add more than or less tha 15 users into the group and it works just fine. so, they've added a 16th user and thats fixed the problem.
Thanks all for your help.Martin

Good workaround, however, that isn't normal as we all know. I guess still no idea on the root cause?Sukh

Nope, no clue and the customer is happy with this work around so we'll stick with this until we upgarde to 2010.
thanks
