Spell Check Dictionary for Papiamentu - Is There a Way to Create One?

Papiamentu is spoken on the islands of Bonaire, Curaao, and Aruba.  There are about 260,000 speakers.  A spell check dictionary was developed by students at the University of the Antilles for Word 2003.   In Word 2010, there was a change to the dictionary format so that the papiamentu spell check dictionary no longer works.

Is there a way to develop a spell check dictionary for Word 2010?  (We have tried the custom dictionary already.)

Masha danki (thank you very much)

Hi,

To change the language of a document to check spelling, please go to Review > Language > Set Proofing Language, Word 2010 have included proofing tools for Papiamentu. You can select Papiamentu, then start typing.

If I misunderstood anything, feel free to let me know.

Dear Mr. Chen,

I see that in the English version of Word 2010 "Papiamentu" is in the list. But in the Dutch version of Word 2010 we have, "Papiamento" is listed. Some background info: "Papiamento" is the way it is spoken in Aruba whereas "Papiamentu" is spoken in Curaao and Bonaire. We are from Bonaire and we need the Papiamentu proofing tools. How could I add this to Word 2010?

Thanks for your reply.  I am completely puzzled by the screen shot you have posted.  There is no spell check support for Papiamentu (Bonaire, Curaao) or Papiamento (Aruba).  In Word, you can mark text in a language other than English so that the English spell checker will not flag it as wrong.  Are you able to spell check the following Papiamentu sentence:  Bos di buriku no ta yega shelu.  If you can, please let me know exactly what version of Word you have and where to buy it.  Thanks again.  Masha danki.

Hi,

I'm sorry for replying late.

I did a test in my Word 2010, I pasted your sentence to Word, selected Papiamentu as the Proofing Language, here is the result:

If I select English as the Proofing Language, the result is here:

I also tested in Word 2013, the results were the same.

So if you want to use Papiamentu to spell check by the following steps:

Go to File tab -> Options -> Language -> Choose Editing Languages -> If Papiamentu is not listed in Editing Language, select it from Add button Add additional editing languages and click Add button. Then choose it as the Proofing Language as I mentioned in the earlier post.

Please kindly check the result. However, if you need to install the Proofing Tools for it, there's currently not one for Papiamentu on the site :(
