Standby and Hibernation killed by SP3 installation
I downloaded and installed SP3 about a week ago, and have noticed only one peculiarity so far. Power Options......my screen saver times in and functions, but sometimes, even with nothing of mine that I know of running, no disk shutoff, no Standby, No Hibernate. Nothing different in my operating procedures....before SP2 I could count on it. Now, it is at best a 'sometimes' thing. This forum was so hard to find, maybe somebody would liketo post a comment in regular msnews.windowsxp.basics newsgroup.

I contacted HP Tech Support and they gave me the solution. They didn't say it was SP2/SP3 related, but told me how to fix it. It's in two parts: 1. Delete the network driver in Device Manager, and reboot, at which time it will reinstall the driver. 2. There's a hidden place I hadn't seen before, buried in Power Options. I had to UNcheck where it allows network activity to prevent Power Options from going into Standby or Hibernate. I did those two things, and it's been working just fine ever since.
