Storage Group Limit?
Hello,
I recently installed 2007 exchange in a 2003 exchange existing infrastructure. Everything seemed to go okay, but wheni started to create storage groups, it wouldn't allow me to create more than 5. My reasoning for going to exchange 2007 enterprise was the huge jump in storage groups. I only have 5 groups with1 database each. It lets me create more, but won't let me mount them. Any suggests.. Thanks in advance

I don't have E2K7 in front of me to play with but maybe it is because of Exchange being in a mixed environmet. Will research it later today

It sounds like you have installed Exchange 2007 Standard as it only allows for 5 databases.
Scott details the some of differences in the editions and versions here:

thats what i thought also, but reading fromt the disc from MVL it says Microsoft exchange server -enterprise 2007. So I thought enterprise was 50 storage groups and 50 databases. is there a way to tell for sure what version i am running?

Run this command from the Exchange Management Shell and it will return a list of all the Exchange servers along with the version and edition that each is running.
Get-ExchangeServer |fl name, AdminDisplayVersion, edition

Here is what i got. I have an existing 2003 exchange server on the network. I am going to move the mailboxes off. Could that be why its only allowing 5 because of the legacy mailboxes?Or am i off in that train of thought. But the JAEXCHANGE is the 2007 exchange box. Thanks again for the help. I appreciate any i can get.

I think the problem is the mixed functionality but not 100% haven't tested this. Are you going to decommision Jane?

I was planning on it. Only thing is it is installed on a PDC, and i was reading you can't demote it when its on a PDC..but i wonder if i can just uninstall it? I didn't do the exchange 2003 install. I am jumping in this in the middle. Upgrading to 2007 with 2006 ISA, So i guess the question is can i uninstall the 2003 box without screwing up the whole enviroment

Have you entered the product key or are you still running under the trial period? You're limited to five databases until you enter the product key.

Yes you can remove the Exchange 2003 box but you will need to follow this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/822931
I also recommend no lingering problems with AD/DNS as well.

I thought i did, but to be safe i went back and tried to start the wizard, when i went to server configuration and it didn't not give me the option to enter product key. So i assume that means I for sure did enter it. Is there any other activation that might be required?

Can you provide the output for the following:
Get-ExchangeServer | fl name,*version*,*trial*,edition
Also, what errors are you getting when you try to mount the 6th database? Or add more than five storage groups and or databases? Please paste the full event log entries for any errors/warnings related to this issue.
THanks
David.

Dave is it possible to create more than five databases with a mixed environment? I haven't tested this yet.

JANE is the 2003 exchange server and JAEXCHANGE is the 2k7

It lets me create a new storage group, but when i try to create a new database i am getting this error

Have you restarted the information store since you entered the product key?
And having an Exchange Server 2003 server in the org does not impact the number of databases you can configure and mount on an Exchange Server 2007 server.

that's exactly what it was, can't believe I didn't think of that. Thanks for all who responded, your help was very much appreciated. Does anyone know of a good Exchange 2007 administration course?

Hi there,
I'm running into the same issue, unfortunately restarting the store didn't help at all.
Here's some output:
[PS] C:\Windows\System32>Get-ExchangeServer | fl name,*version*,*trial*,edition
Name : VASNEDC02AdminDisplayVersion : Version 6.5 (Build 7638.2: Service Pack 2)ExchangeVersion : 0.0 (6.5.6500.0)IsExchange2007TrialEdition : FalseIsExpiredExchange2007TrialEdition : FalseRemainingTrialPeriod : 00:00:00Edition : Enterprise
Name : VASNEEX01AdminDisplayVersion : Version 8.1 (Build 240.6)ExchangeVersion : 0.1 (8.0.535.0)IsExchange2007TrialEdition : FalseIsExpiredExchange2007TrialEdition : FalseRemainingTrialPeriod : 00:00:00Edition : Enterprise
The error when creating the database is:
Error:
The number of databases in a storage group is ,imited to 5.
Any idea is appreciated
Andreas
