Storage Limits not being enforced?
I'm having an issue with my mail storage limit defaults not corresponding to the mailboxes. I have the Database (In Organization Configuration > Mailbox > Database Manager) set to issue a warning at 400mb. The prohibit boxes aren't set yet because we have half are mailboxes over the limit and are trying to get people below that first. It's set to send a message at 1am. So to check I run the shell command to bring up all mailboxes by size, including StorageLimitStatus and I expect that everything above 400mb should be set to IssueWarning, but I only see 4, the rest show as BelowLimit. I've randomly checked some of these on the Recipient Config > Mailbox side (individual mailboxes) and under Mailbox Settings > Storage Quotas they are checked to use mailbox database defaults. The ones that show as IssueWarning, are set individually, they are not using the Use mailbox database defaults. At this point I'm not sure if the storage limit feature is working.

What version, service pack and rollup hotfix level of Exchange? Please post exactly what you see. Are the mailboxes in question configured to use the mailbox database default quota? Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

There is a default cache time of 2 hours before changes in storage quotas are enforced: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb684892(EXCHG.80).aspx

Version 14.1 (Build 218.15) or Version: 14.01.0218.013 depending on if you're looking at the server on the console or the about on the console. I can't see any SPs or rollup level for exchange specifically. For Windows Server it's 2008 R2 Enterprise, no SP. It looks like the last hotfix was 983440. Yes, the mailboxes are set to use the mailbox database default quota. Most anyway, the ones that aren't I can see on the statistics and can set them to do so. I have been able to find that the get-mailboxstatistics switch "StorageLimitStatus" only shows the mailbox setting, not if they are in compliance with the database setting. My only indication that the warnings are not going out are the words of a few people, but if 40 of 185 users are above the first limit (send a warning) I would have heard. I'd like to be able to test these settings as well. Is there a way to send the warning at a different time than, 12, 1 and 2am or also force a mailbox to have a larger size than it actually is? Thanks. -edit- Found the customized time for checking the limits.

These changes have been in place since the end of October.

Ok, well there is one more thing that come into play here and its fixed in SP1 RU6 ( Or go straight to SP2): You are at SP1 with no Rollups, so I would definetely think of upgrading regardless. Now, I dont know if this applies and if this would affect what you are seeing in Powershell, but worth taking a look at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2480474 Users do not receive quota warning messages after applying SP1 for Exchange 2010

That's it. We'll pull down SP2. Thank you.

I'll search as well, but I thought I'd ask if this can be tested. We upgraded over the weekend, but no one is receiving the warning messages. Is there a command that can be sent to test the function, or an event log ID I can look for to see that it tried to sent but failed? Thanks.
