Sync AD and Exchange 2013

When creating a distribution group or user in Active Directory Users and Computers, the mailbox is not being created in Exchange 2013.  What service or application handles this synchronization?  The exchange properties are not getting stamped in ADSI edit either.  I am new to the setup we have, so I am assume there is some service that is not running?  Can anyone give me some insight of how this should be setup?  If this is not possible, is there a PowerShell command to run to update the AD account so it is linked exchange?

Thanks for your help!!

You Create users in Active directory users and computers, if you need mailbox to be created you need to use Exchange control panel and their create new mailbox and choose existing user, select the user created in AD and create the mailbox.

User management : AD

Mailbox Management : Exchange control panel

Else you can use a script to create mailbox for all the Users

Thanks for the quick reply.  Not quite what I expected, but I understand.

What about for a Distribution Group?  In exchange, when I go into Group and create it tells me the group already exists.  What am I missing here for creating an email address for a group in Exchange 2013?  I assume a distribution group with an email address does not need a user account as well?

I found part of the answer. From the Exchange Management Shell, I used the cmdlet: Enable-Distribution Group "GROUP_NAME" and now I see it in Exchange ECP.

Of course, when I try to send an email to the group I get an undeliverable bounce-back email.  So close.

I still do not see the Exchange stamps on the group in ADSI.

The x500 address is not getting created for the group.  I assume that is part of the issue.

Me again.  So I manually added LegacyExchangeDN attribute in ADSI editor and now I can send email to the group.  Now I have to figure out how to add more than one email address to an existing group.  I hope all this information helps someone in the future.

Hi,

Here's an article about Mail-Enable or Mail-Disable a Distribution Group: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997448%28v=exchg.141%29.aspx Meanwhile, you can login EAC and switch to Recipients---> Groups, select DG and click Edit, then switch to Email Options to add additional to DG. Figure as below:

Thanks

Thank you for the reply.  This did not work so I had to create individual groups.  Thanks for your assistance.
