Could you tell me which version of Windows system are you using? Did this issue only appeared in Excel? Please check if it works fine in Word.
Did you clear up the recent documents list in your excel? I suggest you open several workbooks first and check if it can be appeared in recent documents again. If this issue still exists, there are 2 methods you can try.
Method 1:
Please check if you modify the Option "Show this number of recent documents" is set to 0.
Click File tab- Options- Select Advanced- Find Display option- Set the number of documents to display- then click "OK". (As shown in the following figure.)
If the number of this option is 0, please modify the number and set it greater than 0.
Method 2:
Try to alter the registry:
Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer
Chang the registry key:
NoRecentDocsHistory
From 1 to 0
