Timestamp on emails when Exchange mailstore has been down
Hello All Today we had an issue. The transaction log drive for one of our Exchange 2007 SP1 mailbox stores filled to capacity and the store dismounted. Unfortunately, this wasn't picked up for a while since the users affected were outside work hours. After a few hours, someone noticed and the logs were moved and the store mounted. Now, we have a question. What happens to the emails that were attempted for delivery to the store whlist it was down? I assume they would have been queued at the nearest Hub Transport server? In which case, what would be the timestamp on these emails once the users receive them? Would the timestamp be the time the store was mounted, or the true timestamp (I'm talking about the Recieved value)?

Which timestamp are you referring to? The received timestamp in Outlook will be the time the message is delivered to the mailbox. The sent timestamp will not change, because that is on the header. All you will see in the headers is the delivery time to the hub transport store. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP. http://blog.sembee.co.uk , http://exbpa.com/

Hi Simon Sorry, I meant the Received timestamp... So when you say the time it was delivered to the mailbox, this means the time the store was mounted? Basically, they will have loads of emails with the same Received timestamp? Thanks!

If the mailbox store is not mounted then the message cannot be delivered to the mailbox, so yes, it will be shortly after the store has come back online. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP. http://blog.sembee.co.uk , http://exbpa.com/
