Trouble with the user name in Excel
After the installation of Office 365 on a terminal server running server 2008r2 all the files that people open show in use by the installer rather than by the current user. Anyway to fix this?

Hi BWBARCOMB,

Based on your description, I have 2 different comprehensions about your issue I would like to know the specific situation of your issue.

1. You were the first user to open open files and you got the message "File in use by XXX".
2. There was a user1 opened the file, then you opened the file again and you got the message "File in use by XXX".The issue is the name of user is the installer instead of user1.

Which kind of situation is about your issue?

Did you want to remove the message box when you open the file? Or tip the correct user of message box who is using the file?

First of all about "File in use" issue, I suggest you read this KB article:

If this KB article does not work for you, please provide more information about your issue. I'm glad to help and follow up your reply.

I will read the KB article but in the mean time.  Office 365 pro was installed on terminal servers running Windows 2008r2 by me.  The install went good, now errors and all the applications are working as expected.  The problem we have is:

The system shows that the open Office files are locked for editing by the person who performed the Office installation rather than the person who has it open.   Example = from time to time users on terminal servers will have an Excel or Word file open and someone else will go to open the same file unaware that it's in use by someone.  This can be a new file or a file that has been around for years, a new version or old version, doesn't matter.  When that second person tries to open the file a pop up message comes up and states that the file is already open for editing by Bryan "that's me the person who installed the Office software",  do you want to use a read only copy or be notified.  This is all normal but when this happens the second person doesn't know who really has it open so they can't contact them to see if they really need that file open at the time.

The system should use the users "username" when ever an Office file is open but instead it keeps the installers name.  Now I know the registry key under Hkey_current_user\software\Microsoft\office\common\userinfo has the key that is suppose to be used but not sure why that's not getting changed to the active user rather than the installation user.

Thank you for your time and help

I verified that the registry on the terminal servers already have the correct keys.

thank you!
